Description

Ex-Stirling Moss Auto Racing Team (S.M.A.R.T)

Driven by Stirling Moss, Jack Brabham, Hugh Dibley, Max Wilson, with international race-winning history in the UK, America and the Bahamas. The first ever sports car to be awarded the ‘Goodwood Ton’.

Chassis SC-2-64 was delivered new to BOAC pilot and rapid gentleman racer Hugh Dibley as part of Stirling Moss’ newly formed racing team. Powered from new by the very powerful 2.5-litre Climax FPF, and resplendent in Mercedes “Hellgrün” green with a BRG stripe.

Jack Brabham tested it at Goodwood in early ‘64, followed by Stirling Moss at Silverstone shortly after. During these tests, it was deemed the car needed a rear aerofoil to improve rear instability. The new aerofoil was so effective that Ron Tauranac copied its dimensions and ensured that all BT8s were suitably equipped thereafter. From that point on, Dibley was blisteringly fast. By May ‘64 chassis 2 had become the first ever sports car to achieve a 100mph average race lap at Goodwood, winning twice at 62nd Members’ Meeting. Wins at Brands Hatch and Castle Combe followed in June ‘64, before Dibley won the European Grand Prix supporting International Sports Car race at Brands, beating Hulme, Stewart, Salvadori, Hobbs, Hawkins and Gardner. Another win at Castle Combe before the RAC Tourist Trophy at Goodwood. Dibley could have won the TT, running right at the front amongst the works Shelby, Ferrari, Aston, Lotus teams, plus Bruce McLaren’s Zerex Special... until the BT8’s Climax engine let go!

The next chapter was in America where Dibley ran in the 2-litre Can-Am class, visiting Mosport, Riverside (class-win) and Laguna Seca.

Its last win for Dibley was a class victory at the International Bahamas Speed Week, before it went to its last UK owner Max Wilson. He took 5 overall wins (Silverstone/Castle Combe) and 3 class wins (Oulton/Brands), before the car went back to America (advertised in Autosport in Feb ‘67)

The car returned to the UK in the late ‘70s with Robs Lamplough, onto Roger Bates, and then Mike Harrison who had experts Peter Denty Racing restore the car.

Now it’s your chance to race the car again at Goodwood
