Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 SS Pininfarina, 1949

A rare opportunity to acquire one of the most coveted post-war Alfa Romeos: a 1949 6C 2500 Super Sport, bodied with an elegant two-seat cabriolet coachwork by Carrozzeria Pinin Farina. Alfa's tradition of building cars conceived first and foremost for the driver was upheld by the 2500. Although the box-section chassis was no longer state of the art, it offered fully independent suspension, generously proportioned brakes, quick steering, and an unusually smooth column-mounted gear lever. The engine was the latest version of Alfa's race-bred double-overhead-camshaft inline six; its 2,443-cubic-centimetre displacement was achieved by enlarging the bore of the 2300. Maximum output ranged from 90 horsepower in the single-carburettor Sport specification to 105 horsepower in the triple-carburettor Super Sport. Considerably lighter than the sedan, the Super Sport could comfortably exceed 100 mph.

The short-wheelbase Super Sport chassis was produced until 1951; a total of 383 examples were built. Most of these bespoke, hand-built cars received a Superleggera coupé body by Touring, while the remainder, including this car, were bodied as cabriolets by Pinin Farina. The late 1940s marked a period of exceptional creativity for Pinin Farina, and the 6C 2500 chassis, particularly in Super Sport guise, gave the Italian maestro the freedom to experiment with new lines and design solutions. A 6C 2500 SS bodied similarly to this example even took first place at the 1949 Concours d'Elegance at Villa d'Este.

This particular 1949 6C 2500 SS Pininfarina shows an indicated mileage of 43,113 km. The paintwork is in a condition befitting the car's age, and the upholstery likewise shows signs of use that, given this car's history, come as no surprise. The car boasts a rich history; it took part in the Concours d'Elegance at Het Loo Palace in 2008 and comes with a letter from Tito Rubbio regarding entry into the 2009 Mille Miglia. The car also holds a FIVA card and a RIAR registration, further underscoring its authenticity and historical significance. Over the years, the car has been maintained and restored by respected specialists in the classic car world, including Steutel Renovatie van Klassieke Automobielen, BCCP Fuelsystems, and Geert Jan Peters Klassieke Automobielen. The work carried out is thoroughly documented, encompassing the overhaul of the electrical system, carburettors, brakes, suspension, and various drivetrain components.

The car comes with an impressive file, including original Alfa Romeo instruction booklets (Uso e Manutenzione and Istruzioni per le Riparazioni), an extensive provenance and history dossier compiled in 2013 with technical specifications and historical background, an official valuation report prepared in accordance with Article 7:960 of the Dutch Civil Code, numerous maintenance and restoration invoices dating from 2010 onward, and a reference to the book "Alfa Romeo 6C 2500" by Angelo Tito Anselmi. This combination of rarity, an award-winning Pininfarina body, documented history, and meticulous care makes this 6C 2500 SS an outstanding acquisition for the serious collector; a car ready for concours, touring, or simply to be enjoyed. Built in 1949, this 6C 2500 SS also falls within the period recognised for eligibility by the modern Mille Miglia, a point underscored by the accompanying letter regarding a previous entry for this event in 2009. As such, participation in one of the world's most celebrated regularity rallies remains within reach of this car today.
