Description

Introduced in 1973, the BMW 2002 Turbo holds a particularly important place in the history of the Bavarian marque. Widely regarded as the first European production car to feature a turbocharger, it represented a genuine technological milestone and stood at the very top of the BMW 02 Series range.

Under the bonnet sits a 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine derived from the 2002 tii, further developed with the addition of a turbocharger to produce 170 hp. An impressive figure for a compact sports saloon of the early 1970s, allowing the 2002 Turbo to reach a top speed of over 210 km/h.

Its performance was matched by an equally exclusive market position. When new, the 2002 Turbo was priced at almost twice the cost of a standard BMW 2002, clearly reflecting its status as the flagship and most advanced version of the range.

Its production run, however, was remarkably short. Built only between October 1973 and June 1975, the 2002 Turbo quickly became one of the most distinctive and desirable models of the entire 02 generation.

The example offered here is a Belgian-market car dating from 28 October 1974, with its second and most recent Belgian registration recorded on 28 August 1978. The car has undergone a comprehensive restoration and is today presented in impeccable condition, with an overall appearance worthy of this particularly significant BMW.

Combining pioneering turbocharged technology, remarkable performance for its era and a very limited production period, the BMW 2002 Turbo remains one of the most important and collectible sporting BMWs of the 1970s.
