R129. For those unfamiliar with it: that is the internal code Mercedes-Benz gave to the SL generation built from 1989 to 2001. And if you ask me, it is one of the most underrated classics you can still buy today. While half of Britain's car-loving public fixates on the W113 Pagoda (gorgeous, but these days worth a smart flat rather than a studio) and the rest dream of an R107 straight out of an episode of Dallas, the R129 just sits there. Patiently. Waiting for someone to realise what they have on their hands.

This was the car with which Mercedes showed, back in 1989, that they meant business. Designed by Bruno Sacco, the man responsible for just about everything beautiful and timeless to come out of Stuttgart in the '80s and '90s. Crisp, angular, but without a single superfluous line. And then that legendary party trick: the world's first automatically deploying roll-over bar system, which shot upwards within a fraction of a second the moment the car threatened to tip over. German engineers lying awake at night over scenarios that 99 percent of owners would never encounter. Das Beste oder Nichts, you know how it goes.

Under the bonnet of this example sits no ordinary six-cylinder. This is the 300 SL-24, with the 3.0 litre straight-six featuring four-valve technology, good for 231 hp. The 24-valve version was the connoisseur's engine of the range: smoother, keener and far more sought-after than the standard 12-valve. Not a brutish V8 you want to broadcast at every set of traffic lights, but a civilised, regal power source that will carry you from Whitstable to the Côte d'Azur without complaint, and still be fresh enough for the return leg.

Right, back to the SL in question. This Brilliant Silver metallic convertible has been a Dutch car from day one. First registered in June 1993, and what appeals to me most: from 1997 to 2024 it was registered to one and the same private owner. Twenty-six years. This is not a car that has been passed from hand to hand, this is a car someone enjoyed for years and kept looking after properly. Its MOT history is one unbroken string of passed inspections, year in, year out, kept neatly in the Netherlands without any import or export faff.

The combination simply works. Silver in the classic German manner, a leather interior, rear-wheel drive as it should be, and a four-speed automatic that suits the character of this car perfectly. This is not an SL you nervously hustle through the bends at Zandvoort. This is the SL in which, on a sunny Saturday, you drop the top, put on your sunglasses and cruise along the coast with one arm resting casually on the door, as if you have rolled straight out of an advert for German solidity. And, in fact, you have.

What I appreciate so much about the R129: it is a car you can still use the way it was meant to be used. Not a fragile museum piece that falls apart at the first spot of rain. This thing was built to last for decades, and it has proven exactly that by now. A fine set of Michelin summer tyres underneath, a tank of petrol in it, and off you go. For under thirty grand you get a genuine Mercedes SL, built in the days when 'over-engineered' was still a compliment and not a swear word from an accountants' meeting.

In a few years, everyone will suddenly want an R129. Beat the rush.
