There's a school of thought that says the last real M-badged BMW was the E46 M3, or perhaps the E92 with that delicious V8. Ask ten enthusiasts and you'll get eleven answers, usually with plenty of hand gestures and a nod to 'the good old days when everything was better'. But there's one generation that, quietly and years later, suddenly finds itself embraced by all. The F82 M4. When it was new, people complained that the twin-turbocharged straight-six really didn't sound like the old naturally aspirated wonders, that the steering felt too digital, that the whole thing was just a touch too polished. And look at it now. That very same F82 is treated as the last of the Mohicans, because everything that came after got heavier, bigger and, let's be honest, fitted with a grille you could fit a whole Sunday roast into.
What this particular M4 is all about is a word that makes the purists drool: manual gearbox. No dual-clutch shifting faster than you can blink, no paddles behind the wheel. Just a stick, three pedals and the age-old responsibility of coordinating all of it yourself. In an age where even an espresso machine shifts gears automatically these days, a manual in a 431 bhp coupé is almost a political statement. The S55 engine delivers that power through twin turbos that build pressure with a growl, and with the windows down in a tunnel on a downshift you'll hear exactly why people are suddenly cherishing these cars. Granted, you have to do the work yourself. But that's precisely the point.
Right, back to the example standing here with us. An F82 M4 from 2014, so from the very first year of production, in the colour B39 Mineralgrau metallic. A grey that looks modest on a dreary British Tuesday and then, in the sun, suddenly takes on a depth that stops you in your tracks. No shouty Yas Marina Blau or Austin Yellow announcing your arrival from Brighton to Manchester, but a shade for the connoisseur who has no need to tell you what he drives. The 19-inch alloy wheels carry the characteristic staggered sizing, 255 up front and 275 at the rear, exactly as it should be on a car that sends its power to the rear axle via a limited-slip differential.
And then the history, because that's something we do love. This M4 has spent almost its entire life on the ramp at De Maassche in Echt, a BMW specialist, with a service folder that would make many a collector jealous. I've combed through all twenty-three pages and it reads like the diary of a car that was taken seriously. Major services with Castrol oil, new spark plugs, air filters, cabin filters, brake fluid changes, and even the rear differential got its own service with the correct MSP oil inside. The air conditioning was faithfully topped up and the a/c condenser is neatly recorded. The alarm with SCM certification was checked and approved year after year, so no surprises on that front. This isn't a car that was forgotten in a barn somewhere and is now being offered with a nice little story, this is one that was properly looked after by people who knew what they had on their hands.
The Carfax confirms the quiet past: kept neatly in the Netherlands, no import, no export, passed every roadworthiness test it came across. Four seats, a genuine two-door coupé. The MOT runs until February 2026, so you can simply hop in and go.
What I like about this M4 is that it sits right on the dividing line. Modern enough to use every day, old enough to have a soul, and with that manual gearbox rare enough to have plenty of collectors twitching in a few years' time. Most F82s you come across have the automatic, because that simply sold more easily. The manual examples are growing scarcer by the day, and that's exactly the kind of detail the market will regret in five years' time, with the benefit of hindsight.
Granted, it asks something of you. You have to clutch yourself, shift yourself, think yourself. But anyone who has ever experienced what it's like to dive into a tunnel in a well-held third gear knows that an automatic will never give you that feeling back.
Manual gearbox, rear-wheel drive, 431 bhp and a limited-slip differential. If that does nothing for you, then you probably passed your driving test for the wrong reasons.

Hand still on the gear knob,
