The E30 is, for many people, the BMW. The last of the real ones, say the purists, with twin round headlights, a nose you can still look in the eye, and a body without a gram of fat too much. Designed in an era when Munich still believed a car should above all drive, not talk, not beep, and certainly not park itself. The E30 came, saw, and became a legend. And while everyone these days drools over an M3 Evolution wearing a price tag that could buy you a house in Chelsea, the humble 316i is all too often forgotten. Unjustly so.

Because that very simplicity is the charm. No six cylinders to drink your bank account dry, no turbo throwing a tantrum every other week, just a four-cylinder that quietly gets on with the job. Reliable as the German railways of the last century, back when the trains still ran on time. And in Touring guise, perhaps the loveliest variant they ever made of the E30. That raked rear glass, that practical tailgate, those perfect proportions. An estate that isn't clumsy but genuinely elegant, something most of today's estates simply can't pull off anymore.
