Within Alfa Romeo, GTV might not be the loudest badge, but it is one that carries weight. Since the sixties, Gran Turismo Veloce has stood for sporting coupés that combine driving pleasure, design and everyday usability. Models such as the Tipo 105 and 115 have become icons, while the Alfetta-based GTVs of the seventies and eighties are now widely recognised as serious classics. That the latter have become rare in good condition does nothing to diminish their reputation: it confirms it.

When Alfa Romeo needed to develop a successor to both the classic Spider and the sporting coupé in the early nineties, the marque stood at a crossroads. The automotive world was changing fast: emissions regulations tightened, platform-sharing became the norm and the sports-car segment was professionalising. Yet this was also an era when cars were still allowed to stir emotion. BMW dominated the coupé class with the E36, Fiat surprised friend and foe alike with its bold Coupé and Japanese marques were out in force. Alfa Romeo had to respond, and did so in a manner entirely its own.

Rather than reaching back to the past, Alfa chose a radically new design philosophy. For the new Spider and GTV, internally designated Tipo 916, the marque collaborated with Pininfarina, where designer Enrico Fumia drew a distinctive yet timeless silhouette. No retro pastiche, no safe choices: a design that dared to polarise and, precisely because of that, would endure.

The 916's profile is defined by a striking crease line that flows from the bonnet all the way to the rear screen. The sharply tapering nose with its characteristic Alfa shield, headlamps that read as round units and the high, truncated tail with its central light bar lend the car an almost concept-car presence. Even two facelifts left the power of this design intact: a rarity in an age of ever-shorter model cycles.

Beneath the skin, Alfa Romeo stayed true to driving involvement. The GTV 916 was front-wheel drive, yet proved that drivetrain layout is not everything. Thanks to a well-balanced chassis, a keen front end and spirited engines, the GTV delivered a driving experience praised by press and enthusiasts alike. It was no accident that Jeremy Clarkson declared the GTV the best sports car "in the wòòòòrld" in 1998: a verdict that cemented the 916's reputation once and for all.

The interior, designed under the direction of Walter de'Silva, breathed the same philosophy: driver-focused, idiosyncratic and unmistakably Alfa. Throughout the production years, the cabin evolved in step with the brand's design language, the most notable change being the switch to round air vents in the late nineties.

More than thirty years after its debut, the Alfa Romeo GTV 916 remains a car that stirs emotion. Love at first sight, growing only stronger the moment you slip behind the wheel.

The car offered here is an Alfa Romeo GTV 1.8 Twin Spark from 1997, finished in the exceptionally elegant Blue Minerva, paired with a beige leather interior: a classic and supremely tasteful colour combination that perfectly underlines Pininfarina's design.

The car was first registered on 5 July 1997 in Ancona, Italy, to its original owner: an elderly gentleman for whom this was the fulfilment of an absolute dream. Sadly, he passed away a few years later. His wife chose to keep the GTV, and the car was then carefully stored for many years. The family simply could not part with this special Alfa.

Throughout that time the car was kept indoors and driven only occasionally to keep the mechanicals in optimal condition. The result is exceptional: an odometer showing just 10,500 km and a state that can, in all honesty, be described as delivery-fresh.

It is important to stress: this is not a restored or cosmetically enhanced example. The car is completely untouched and original. The underside, too, is in exceptional condition: no rust, no corrosion, no ageing whatsoever, including floor and subframes.

The 1.8 Twin Spark is a perfect match for the GTV's character: light on its feet, mechanically pure and blessed with the classic Alfa engine note that makes this generation so beloved.

A rare opportunity for the collector or enthusiast seeking a unique example of the Alfa Romeo GTV 916, exactly as it was always meant to be.
