Held in one of America’s most desirable locations, the 2008 Hamptons Auto Classic sale will feature several quality entries. And, in addition to cars to be sold by auction, the event also includes many classics that will be sold privately: none more collectable than the 1959 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster.
The example you can see here would have been a one-owner car – if the original buyer had not passed it on to his son. It’s finished in grey/blue with scarlet leather interior.
Estimated at $325,000 - 350,000, the 1937 Jaguar SS 100 is a car that will be auctioned on the day. It was originally a 2.5-litre but, like so many SS 100s, is now fitted with a 3.5-litre unit (the original block does, however, come with the car) and was an entry in the 2005 Mille Miglia retrospective event. These are attractive, potent cars that, like the 300 SL Roadster, have greatly appreciated in price in recent years.

Later Jaguars (and I’ll conveniently ignore the fact that the SS 100 was, strictly speaking, an ‘SS’ rather than a ‘Jaguar’) from the fifties are now better recognised, with commensurate increase in value. The sale includes a 1954 Jaguar XK120M FHC ($85,000 - $95,000), a 1955 Jaguar XK140MC OTS ($130,000 - $140,000), and a 1957 Jaguar XK150 DHC for $70,000 - 75,000. The XK140 looks superb, catalogued as "...a car as close to perfect as possible in every conceivable detail, and a shelf full of JCNA trophies each bearing the legend '100 per cent'."

1973 Ferrari 365GTB/4 ‘Daytona’ - Available For Private Sale Only

Another Private Treaty car is the 1973 Ferrari 365GTB/4 ‘Daytona’. With only 7000 miles from new, the then Rosso Dino machine was supplied new to a Texas Ferrari dealer "as the last Daytona he would receive". Since then, it’s resided in many US collectors’ garages until passing into the current owner’s hands, who repainted the car Giallo Fly yellow - one of the classic 'Daytona' colours.

It’s not all European inventory as the organiser of the sale, the Kensington Motor Group, Inc., is also listing iconic Americana such as the 1932 Ford Model ‘A’ Deuce Coupe Racer for a reasonable $55,000 - $60,000, a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette 427/435 4-speed convertible accorded ‘Top Flite’ preparation status at $150,000 - $160,000, and a be-finned, restored 1959 Cadillac Eldorado Biarritz for $130,000 - 150,000.
