Manufactured in Coventry, England

Factory US compliance plate confirms manufacture in December 1972

1973 Model Year in the chassis prefix, “U” identifies US specification and “D” identifies the 1973 model year

BW suffix = factory Borg-Warner automatic transmission.

The identification plate records Engine No. 7S9378LA

Body No. 4S3329

Gearbox No. 10286

These exact chassis, engine, body and gearbox numbers are also recorded in the international XKEData registry

60-degree V12 configuration

Single overhead camshaft per cylinder bank

The Series 3 V12 was quoted by Jaguar at 272 hp in its standard specification; later US-market low-compression versions are generally quoted lower

Engine suffix “LA” corresponds to the low-compression V12 specification associated with later US cars for a 1973 US-spec car, approximately 241 bhp is the commonly quoted output, with around 386 Nm / 285 lb-ft of torque.

3-speed Borg-Warner automatic transmission

Power-assisted rack-and-pinion steering, standard on the Series 3.

Four-wheel independent suspension

Four-wheel disc brakes

Chrome centre-lock wire wheels

Factory air conditioning

Exterior currently finished in a deep Garnet / Bright Red

Classic Series 3 features including the wider track, flared wheel arches, large cross-slatted front grille and distinctive quad exhaust outlets

US-specification side marker lights visible on the body

Historical record places the car in Beverly Hills, California

Recorded in the international E-Type registry since 8 September 2011

California registration recorded at the time as 6SHA670

Mileage documented in the 2011 California advertisement 38,075 miles

Current Smiths odometer visibly showing 38,736 miles

Therefore only 661 miles have been added since the documented 2011 mileage

Series 3 production ran from 1971 to 1974

Unlike earlier E-Types, power steering was standard and an automatic gearbox was available on the Roadster

This particular example combines a desirable period specification: V12 + Roadster + LHD + US specification + factory automatic + factory air conditioning + chrome wire wheels

E-Type Series 3

The Jaguar E-Type was unveiled in 1961 and rapidly became one of the defining sports cars of the twentieth century. Its combination of advanced construction, independent suspension, four-wheel disc brakes, high performance and dramatic styling made it revolutionary for its time.

Jaguar ultimately produced more than 70,000 E-Types between 1961 and 1974.

The final major evolution arrived in 1971 with the Series 3. The biggest change was the introduction of Jaguar's new 5.3-litre V12, officially quoted at 272 hp in its original specification.

To accommodate the new engine and provide greater comfort, the Series 3 used the longer 2+2 wheelbase for both the Coupé and Roadster, together with a wider track, larger tyres, flared wheel arches, improved brakes and standard power steering.

Visually, the Series 3 is immediately recognisable by its large front grille, wider stance, flared arches and four exhaust outlets.

The model evolved away from the more uncompromising character of the early E-Type and became a faster, smoother and more luxurious Grand Touring sports car, particularly when equipped with the V12, automatic transmission and air conditioning.

This car is especially representative of that philosophy: a December 1972-built, 1973-model-year US-spec V12 Roadster with automatic transmission and air conditioning, preserved with documented California history and showing only 38,736 miles today versus 38,075 miles recorded in 2011.
