Description

The 1960 Daimler Ferret Scout Car (4x4), often encountered as Mk. II, Model B, epitomises British postwar reconnaissance design: compact, nimble, and lightly armoured. Built for scouting, liaison, and internal security duties, the Ferret's small footprint and excellent cross-country mobility made it ideal for rapid observation and patrol tasks. Its hull provided protection against small arms and shell splinters while keeping weight low for agility. The Ferret typically carried a crew of two to four, with provisions for a pintle-mounted machine gun for self-defence and observation duties. Internally the layout emphasised visibility and communications equipment, enabling commanders and scouts to observe, report, and withdraw quickly. Mechanically robust, the Ferret combined a simple, easy-to-maintain chassis and drivetrain with independent suspension to handle rough terrain. The Mk. II and Mk. III iterations introduced refinements in armour layout, ergonomics, and equipment fit, and the Model B designation generally indicated a factory configuration optimised for reconnaissance with specific radio and mounting options. Widely exported and used by many armies, the Ferret proved a durable and adaptable platform; its legacy influenced later light armoured reconnaissance vehicles.

This Daimler Ferret Scout Car entered service with the British Army in 1960 and was registered 02DA41 and fitted with a Rolls-Royce B60 engine. It is not known when it was retired from the army, but it was first registered for civilian use in May 2017 and given the year appropriate registration number 938 UYV and issued with a V5 registration document. Repainted in the correct period army green it appears to have all its original equipment and a fake 30-inch Browning machine gun with its cartridge boxes in the turret. Also tucked in the map case is a period Ordnance Survey of Northern Ireland No. 2 Londonderry, whether this vehicle served there is unknown and the map could have been added for effect. Out of the 4,409 produced between 1952 and 1971 and sent all over the world, very few remine in the UK and only a handful which are as complete and in this good condition as this one!
