Finding a 1998 Mercedes-Benz SLK is not difficult. Finding one with only 12,000 kilometers? That is an entirely different story. And we are not simply talking about a car that has seen very little use. This is the kind of SLK that, after a few minutes of looking it over, makes you wonder whether someone somehow managed to stop time for the past 28 years.

The first-generation Mercedes-Benz SLK, known internally as the R170, arrived in 1996 and brought something genuinely special to the compact roadster segment. The name stood for Sportlich, Leicht und Kurz: sporty, light, and compact. But the real talking point, of course, was the electrically operated metal Vario-roof.

At the touch of a button, the SLK transformed from a closed coupé into an open roadster in approximately 25 seconds. Today we are used to such things, but in the mid-1990s it felt almost futuristic. No fuss with a fabric soft top, no compromise in winter: simply a genuine convertible and coupé in one. And then there was the SLK 230 Kompressor.

Under the hood lies a 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with a mechanically driven supercharger, producing 193 horsepower and 280 Nm of torque. That was enough to propel the SLK to 100 km/h in just over seven seconds. Fast enough to have some serious fun, but above all wonderfully immediate. The supercharger delivers instant torque and gives this early SLK exactly the kind of character that still makes it surprisingly enjoyable to drive today.

This example was delivered new in Japan in 1998 and has covered just 12,657 kilometers since. And you can see it everywhere. The Brilliant Silver metallic paint pairs beautifully with the striking two-tone red-and-black leather interior. Very 1990s? Absolutely. But that is precisely what makes it so much fun. Add heated seats, air conditioning, and the factory-ordered audio system, and you have an SLK that was exceptionally well specified when new.

What makes this car truly special, however, is its condition. Switches, upholstery, interior panels, the engine bay: everywhere you look, you get the same impression. Almost new. And that applies to more than just the way this Mercedes looks. The chassis feels exceptionally tight, the controls are precise, and the entire car has that difficult-to-describe quality of a vehicle that has barely been used. It is as though its original freshness has simply been preserved.

Perhaps this represents a new way of collecting. Not exclusively searching for cars from the 1950s or 1960s, but instead looking for models we still remember as new cars and of which virtually unused examples have now become remarkably difficult to find.

An SLK 230 Kompressor with 12,000 kilometers may not be the most obvious collector car. But that is exactly what makes it interesting. Whether for a collection or simply to experience what an R170 SLK must have felt like to drive nearly thirty years ago, you are unlikely to get much closer to new than this.
