As one of Bonhams ‘Premier Crus’ sales, the Festival auction always attracts the better entries. In addition to the headlining pre-War Alfa are several other top-notch cars including this ex-Markku Alen, 1982 Lancia 037 Rally Coupé estimated at £100,000 - 120,000.
One of a long line of illustrious race and rally cars from the Torinese manufacturer in the ‘70s, ‘80s and ‘90s, the Lancia was used by Finnish ace Allen in a couple of international rallies in 1982 suffering engine failure both times, before winning the Pace Rally of Wales, the Lancia 037’s first victory. It’s an attractive, potent car that would give an enthusiast with a deep pocket in his rally jacket a lot of fun.

The 1932 Alfa Romeo 8C 2300 Spider, the subject of much pre-sale publicity, is Refer Dept. for price but I think we can assume with its previous ownership in the hands of Alfa-enthusiast David Black, and magical 8C (for eight cylinders) suffix it’s going to go for a lot. Bonhams also have a 1926 Mercedes-Benz Model K 6,240cc Supercharged Torpedo Transformable that will similarly require a ‘phone call to Bond St for the price. Not to your author’s taste, these are nevertheless one of the greats, as is the much more suitable 1928 Bentley 6½-Litre Tourer, for £230,000 - 250,000.

Normally the fare of Goodwood Revival sales, included in the catalogue are two very nice British (Racing Green) sports cars. The 1959 Lister-Jaguar ‘Costin’ BHL 133 is estimated at £400,000 - 500,000, while the 1964 AC Cobra Mark II has a price of £220,000 - 250,000 and is one of those early, narrow-bodied cars that looks so right.

Modern Formula 1 cars represent a phenomenal amount of car and engineering investment for very little money. Bonhams have two in this year’s Festival sale, both Williams; one is the 1998 Williams-Mecachrome Renault FW20 for £40,000 - 50,000 while the same estimate will buy you another product from Didcot, the 1999 Williams-Supertec Renault FW21. Just think how much the equivalent Ferrari would be? (£527,397 for a 1997 Ferrari F310B sold at the RM Maranello Sale to be precise). And you won’t be able to drive either anywhere near what the pros can do.
It’s Goodwood, at the height of the English summer, so let’s go out on two quintessentially British entries. Firstly there’s the ex-Vandervell Products, Vanwall Formula 1 Team, Leyland Worldmaster Series Royal Tiger Grand Prix Car Transporter for £10,000 - 12,000, and secondly the ex-Lord Carnegie, 1954 Bentley R-Type Continental at £220,000 - 250,000.

Such is the appeal of the Goodwood Revival that you could quite happily buy the 1959 Lister Jaguar, plus both of these and have the perfect Équipe in which to: enter the Sussex Trophy, transport said car there in style in the ex-Vanwall lorry, while arriving at the circuit in the Bentley to oversee your team's preperations. The stuff of dreams.
Prior to the motor cars Bonhams will sell over 300 pieces of automobilia including items from the Sir Henry Segrave Collection, a number plate ‘FAT 1’, and a selection of amusing period cartoons by the great British motoring artist Russell Brockbank.
The Sale takes place at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on Friday 22 June 2007, with Automobilia starting at 10.30, Motor Cars at 14.00.
