The Mercedes Benz SLS AMG was the first car ever developed entirely in house by AMG, and clearly nobody in Affalterbach was interested in making a modest debut. They could have started with something sensible, but instead they created a rear wheel drive supercar with a bonnet approximately the length of a small runway, a hand built naturally aspirated V8, Gullwing doors and proportions that look as though somebody sketched the car first and only asked the engineers afterwards whether it was actually possible. Thankfully, it was. Under that enormous bonnet sits the legendary 6.2 litre M159 V8, producing 571 horsepower and sending everything to the rear wheels through the AMG SPEEDSHIFT DCT 7 gearbox. There are no turbochargers, no hybrid assistance and no artificial soundtrack playing through the speakers, just eight cylinders doing exactly what eight cylinders should do. The engine is mounted well behind the front axle and connected to a proper transaxle layout, giving the SLS the engineering credentials to match its outrageous appearance.

The mileage is fully supported by the documented history of the car and the provenance makes the story even more special. Pier Silvio Berlusconi certainly did not choose an ordinary specification. He selected 950U Benitoite Blue Metallic for the exterior and combined it with an Exclusive Beige Leather interior. Even if we say so ourselves, it is one of the most elegant combinations we have seen on an SLS. We have always believed that colours make cars, and this example proves the point perfectly. Most SLS models were ordered in black, silver, white or red, all respectable choices, but every now and then a car appears that shows how much difference the right specification can make.

The specification continues with a very good selection of factory options, including the Bang & Olufsen High End Sound System, AMG Performance steering wheel, Rear View Camera, Memory Package, Black Dinamica headliner and Exclusive Leather interior. All the right boxes were ticked!

The condition is exactly what the mileage and history suggest. Both the paintwork and the interior present in absolute near new condition, and the car remains completely in its original factory paint. The underside presents beautifully, almost as though the car has never seen a drop of rain. Every part of the car reflects how carefully it has been treated throughout its life.

The history is equally complete. The online maintenance book is present, the invoices are present, the original documentation is present and both keys accompany the car.

What makes this SLS so special is not one single detail, but the way everything comes together. You may find another SLS AMG with low mileage, or one with original paint, or perhaps one in a rare colour combination. You may even occasionally find one with strong provenance.
