HISTORY
The Fiat 500 is undoubtedly Italy’s most successful car. This compact classic was designed with one clear aim: to provide the Italian people with transport that was as light, simple and affordable as possible. With its modest specification and extremely simple engineering, the car is not only cheap to run but also particularly easy for the owner to maintain themselves. Ideal for navigating the narrow streets of Italian towns, yet surprisingly equipped with a usable rear seat. This particular car was first registered on 1 January 1968 and has been fully restored. We imported the car from Italy in 2026.

EXTERIOR
The car is finished in a beautiful lavender blue colour. Thanks to the folding roof, you can enjoy the sunshine. The bodywork features excellent fit and finish on the doors, bonnet, boot lid, mudguards and grille. The paintwork, windows, lights, chrome trim and rubber seals are all in very good condition. The car has a distinctive and quintessentially 1960s appearance: compact, rounded and functional, without any superfluous details. At the front, the small round headlights and the simple chrome grille stand out, whilst the short bonnet and bulging mudguards give the car its friendly appearance. The F has outwards-hinged doors (an important difference from the older D model) and narrow bumpers.

INTERIOR
The interior of the Fiat 500 F is just as simple and functional as the exterior. The dashboard is minimalist in design, featuring only a speedometer with integrated indicator lights. Everything is clearly laid out and free of unnecessary frills. The seats are narrow and upright, upholstered in black skai (faux leather) with white piping – a typical feature of the 1960s that was easy to keep clean. The floor is covered with neat black mats with blue accents. The steering wheel has been replaced with a more comfortable, thicker version. The rear seat is small but surprisingly practical for short journeys or extra luggage. The controls are entirely mechanical. The front of the car accommodates the spare wheel. The interior is in excellent condition.

TECHNICAL
Under the bonnet, too, the car looks almost as good as new: the 499cc two-cylinder engine is meticulously maintained. The engineering has been deliberately kept simple: rear-wheel drive, torsion bar front suspension and a very compact rear axle assembly with the engine positioned directly above the drive train. Cooling is entirely air-cooled, eliminating the need for a radiator or water pump. Braking is provided by drum brakes all round, without power assistance, which is typical of this class of car from that era. Maintenance is relatively straightforward: many parts are directly accessible and designed to be replaced without specialist equipment. This made the 500 F not only inexpensive to buy at the time, but also cheap to run and maintain. The tyres are still in very good condition and the car drives well.

GENERAL
The Fiat 500 F is one of the most iconic small cars in Italian motoring history and was built from 1965 to 1972 as the successor to the Fiat 500 D and the earlier ‘Nuova 500’ basic models. With its compact 499 cc two-cylinder air-cooled engine, producing around 18 pk, it was designed as an affordable and extremely simple city car which, thanks to its low weight and minimal technology, was particularly efficient and easy to maintain. The 500 F differed from its predecessor mainly in its outwards-hinged doors (a significant safety improvement over the D’s ‘suicide doors’) and a slightly more refined interior, whilst retaining the pure simplicity of the original concept. The Fiat 500 L succeeded the F, featuring a more luxurious specification including a more elaborate interior and greater comfort, followed by the Fiat 500 R as the final evolution of the classic 500 series, with a slightly larger engine capacity and a more understated finish. The Fiat 500 F, however, remained popular for its pure driving experience, minimal weight and charm, and became a symbol of Italian design and smart mobility at a time when compact city cars had yet to be invented. A total of over 3.5 million Fiat 500s were built. The steel used at the time offered only limited protection against corrosion, making rust a common concern with these models. It is precisely for this reason that well-preserved examples are particularly sought-after today.
