Description
The 308 GT4, Ferrari’s first production mid-engined V8 model, marked a significant turning point in the brand’s history.
The sharp and distinctive styling by Bertone, led by Marcello Gandini, was unconventional for a Ferrari of the time, but is now highly regarded as a unique feature of the GT4.
Powered by a 3.0-litre V8 DOHC engine delivering 255 PS, it offers a pure sports car driving experience thanks to the excellent weight distribution inherent in the mid-engine layout and the characteristic Ferrari engine feel that extends into the high rev range. With its practical 2+2 cabin, it can also be used as a GT.
The 308 GT4 can be considered the progenitor of Ferrari’s V8 mid-engine models, leading on to the 328 and F355. As a car that combines original design, practicality and driving pleasure, it has been increasingly re-evaluated in recent years.
This particular vehicle is a rare right-hand drive model. With production numbers limited, right-hand drive versions were primarily manufactured for markets such as the UK and Australia, making it a special find even amongst the 308 GT4s, the vast majority of which are left-hand drive. This car was produced for the UK market and was first registered there in May 1979.
It was imported to Japan a few years ago and has undergone a comprehensive refurbishment, including repairs to oil leaks and the air conditioning, replacement of spark plugs and suspension bushings, a shock absorber overhaul, and new tyres.
Whilst it may not be in concours condition, the original carpets and seats remain, making this a particularly attractive example due to its high level of originality.
