Description
The Alfa Romeo Giulia TZ was unveiled at the Turin Motor Show in 1962 as a road-legal racing car. It was built by Zagato – hence the ‘Z’ in its name – whilst the ‘T’ stands for ‘Tubolare’ (tubular frame). The Giulia’s 1.6-litre engine, derived from the Giulia TI, produced 112 bhp. Combined with a kerb weight of just 760 kg, made possible by the tubular space-frame and an aluminium body, this had a very positive effect on performance. With the Giulia TZ, Alfa Romeo became almost unbeatable in its own class with this aerodynamic and lightweight sports car, for example at the Targa Florio, at Le Mans, and also at Sebring. A total of 112 units were built between 1963 and 1965. With the arrival of the TZ2 – designed exclusively for racing, featuring a plastic body and an engine developed by Auto-Delta – the TZ was renamed the TZ1 amongst Alfisti. The TZ1 offered here, with chassis #019, was built on 25 May 1964 according to Alfa Romeo Storico and delivered to the Swiss importer in Lugano on the 29th of that month. It was finally first registered on 3 January 1965. Originally finished in ‘AR 210 – vergial’ (yellow-green), the small coupé was repainted in classic red during its lifetime, changed hands several times in the 1960s and 1970s, and was fitted with a new and correct replacement engine around 1972. In the early 1980s, the Alfa was acquired by an enthusiast, who sold it to the last owner in 1997. The latter used the TZ for occasional participation in historic hill climbs and various events before having it restored from November 2001 onwards. During this process, the bodywork was completely stripped down, corroded aluminium panels were replaced, and the car was then repainted red from the bare metal. The engine was fitted with a new cylinder head, Carillo racing connecting rods, custom-made pistons, as well as new valve seats and special valves. The gearbox and suspension were also overhauled, and a set of new magnesium wheels was fitted. The restoration is documented through photographic records and receipts. In July 2003, the restoration was completed and the little speedster was once again able to take part in a wide variety of events. Over the past 23 years, around 19’000 km have been covered in this rare TZ, with regular maintenance carried out. Currently, this lovely Alfa Romeo is in very good technical condition with normal signs of wear and tear. The last veteran MOT was carried out in October 2023, meaning this fantastic little sports car can be registered immediately in most German-speaking cantons in Switzerland.
