Description

According to the production records of Mercedes-Benz, this beautiful 300 SL Roadster was completed in April 1958, finished in white with a black leather interior. Equipped with fully chrome-plated wheels, seat belts, a 3.25:1 rear-axle ratio, a Becker radio with antenna, and leatherette luggage, the car was delivered new to the company Bielenberg in Cologne.

Although the early history of the 300 SL is currently unknown, the Roadster was in the possession of Fred Kowalski in 1974. He sold the car to H. E. Mottmann in 1975. In March 1976, the Mercedes-Benz found a long-term owner when it was purchased by two brothers. According to a report from 1994, the car was repainted light green and the radio was replaced.

The 300 SL apparently spent much of the following 23 years in storage before Karl Heinz began its refurbishment in 1999. After the car had been painted silver, one of the brothers commissioned a Mercedes specialist to service it, including replacing the exhaust system and the front shock absorbers. The owner then enjoyed the car over the next 10 years at a small number of local rallies.

In November 2011, after 35 years in family ownership, the Mercedes-Benz was sold to Herbert Grönemeyer, one of Germany’s most famous and successful rock musicians.

As evidenced by numerous invoices, Mr. Grönemeyer invested in extensive restoration work over the years, initially commissioning a Mercedes specialist and later entrusting HK‑Engineering with the restoration of the vehicle.

In January 2023, Mr. Grönemeyer sold the Roadster to the current owner, a collector based in Austria. Under his stewardship, the 300 SL underwent further restoration by Auto Wien Mitte from March 2023 to June 2025. This work included an engine rebuild (with an overhauled cylinder head and crankshaft), work on the transmission and clutch, repairs to the fuel pump and axles, and the installation of new Michelin tires. According to the available invoices, the total cost of this work exceeded €178,000.

It is important to note that mechanical stampings corresponding to the factory records confirm that this Mercedes-Benz retains its original engine and body. It is also accompanied by a color-matched hardtop. As this 300 SL was carefully maintained for nearly its entire life by dedicated German enthusiasts—including 35 years in family ownership and 10 years in the care of one of the country’s most legendary musicians—it is presented in a highly desirable condition. Furthermore, the car has been thoroughly documented since 1974, with German TÜV and DEKRA certificates, previous purchase agreements, and numerous restoration invoices, in addition to the factory documentation.

With only three documented owners since 1976, this fabulous and lovingly restored 300 SL Roadster represents an exceptionally authentic example that would make an outstanding addition to any collection.
