1979 saw ground-effect arrive in F3 and constructors such as March, Chevron and Martini soon had their 'wing' cars up and running, some with more success than others. The Ron Tauranac-designed RT1 continued to be used by many drivers and although it was still capable of getting its driver on the podium, it was no longer a winner. Thus, the RT3 was born and would soon become one of the most successful F3 designs ever. It was built around a very stiff aluminium tub with honeycomb bulkheads, inboard suspension all round and a centrally located fuel tank. The tub was very narrow which allowed for wide, skirted sidepods for maximum ground-effect and the whole thing was enclosed in very stylish bodywork resulting in one of the best looking F3 cars of the period.
Presented in its correct 1983 European Championship livery, this superb Ralt RT3 (RT3/83 #428) is offered in race-ready condition, with all safety equipment in date and fresh ten year FIA/HTP papers making it an ideal entry to top level historic competition.
Campaigned in period by five-time Le Mans winner, Emanuele Pirro, the bodywork now bears Pirro’s signature having been reacquainted with the car at the Silverstone Festival in 2024. As this RT3 competed in Monaco in period, the car is eligible for the most prestigious of events such as the Monaco Historic Grand Prix, a fabulous credential in today’s historic racing world.
Powered by a correct Alfa Romeo Novamotor engine, the car won the French Historic F3 Championship in 2016 before being purchased by our vendor who undertook a meticulous recommissioning process before returning to the track at the Silverstone Festival last year.
The car is accompanied by a number of period photographs showing it competing at Monaco, Donington and elsewhere and a useful spares package including extra wheels and support items. A spare engine is also available by separate negotiation.
Combining fabulous period provenance, top level eligibility and race-readiness, this is an incredible opportunity to acquire a well known, competitive RT3 from the golden era of Formula 3, presenting in the most fabulous condition, ready for an immediate return to the international historic stage.
