The Mercedes-Benz G-Class or G-Wagon, short for Gelandewagen (cross-country vehicle), is characterised by its boxy styling and body-on-frame construction. It uses three fully locking differentials, one of the few vehicles to have such a feature. The G-Class is still in production and is one of the longest produced Mercedes-Benz vehicles in their history with a span of 32 years. It was developed as a military vehicle from a suggestion by the Shah of Iran and offered as a civilian version in 1979. The first major refinements were introduced in 1981, including an automatic transmission, air conditioning, an auxiliary fuel tank, protective headlamp grilles and a cable winch. Fuel injection became available in 1982 when the 230 GE was introduced in Turin, along with more comfortable and supportive front seats, auxiliary heating, wider tyres and wheel arches. For 1985, differential locks, central door locking and a tachometer became standard.
Our vendor purchased this 280 GE in March 2011, after previously owning an identical specification 230 GE for more than 20 years as his daily driver. He loved the G-wagon so much that when his 230 began to look a bit rough around the edges, he went out and found a far nicer, larger engine example in the identical specification! This example presents well in red with grey and black checked cloth interior. The interior looks very good showing only light signs of wear but in general it's a very nice place to be. The service record for the car is amazing, with more than 20 stamps in the service book showing very regular maintenance and verifying the mileage to be 130,000, not the 30,000 displayed. We think these early G-wagons are a very interesting alternative to the many Land Rovers of the same value and this example is supplied to auction with an MoT test certificate valid until September 2025, V5C registration document and earlier mentioned service book.
