The Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet

Overwhelming demand ultimately led Mercedes-Benz to greenlight a drop-top version of its CLK DTM AMG, the hardcore high-performance version of the CLK. Just 100 closed coupés were built by Mercedes’ special-projects skunkworks HWA to celebrate Bernd Schneider’s 2003 DTM championship title victory. With swollen carbon-fibre bodywork reminiscent of the CLK DTM car, a bespoke 5.5-litre supercharged V8 pumping out an earth-shattering 574bhp and a 0–62mph time of under four seconds, all 100 quickly sold out.

That prompted Mercedes to create the CLK DTM Cabriolet, of which the total production was even lower at just 80 units. The Cabriolet followed the exact same recipe as its closed counterpart. The greatest difference (beyond the lack of a roof) was the addition of two bucket seats in the back, making the Cabriolet a genuine 2+2. Elsewhere, the familiarity was rife, from the Alcantara-trimmed oval steering wheel and the centre-mounted panel of motorsport-inspired toggle switches to the liberal use of glossy carbon-fibre.

That mighty V8 engine wasn’t the only feature on the CLK DTM AMG to be heavily reworked. The suspension, brakes, gearbox, traction and stability control systems and the tyres were all bespoke to this car and designed specifically with circuit prowess in mind. And from behind the wheel, the effort and energy invested into the development of this car was clearly worth it. The CLK DTM AMG is a savagely fast, beautifully balanced and ridiculously grippy convertible, which retains all the refinement and real-world useability you’d expect of a modern-day Mercedes-Benz. It's a proper Jekyll & Hyde car, the CLK DTM: technically extremely good but conceptually a wild child. We love it. And thanks to its rarity, today’s new generation of collectors do, too…

One of a mere six right-hand-drive examples built, this Mercedes-Benz CLK DTM AMG Cabriolet was delivered new to the United Kingdom in October of 2008, finished in Iridium Silver over a black leather and grey suede interior. In the 17 years since, the car has been diligently maintained by just five owners and covered only 28,500 miles. Its condition is as you’d expect of a low-mileage modern car that’s enjoyed such a small number of owners: virtually blemish free inside and out, and generally clean and tidy all round.

Perhaps the maddest, most left-field and rarest modern-era Mercedes of them all, the CLK DTM AMG is, quite rightly, an extremely desirable proposition for collectors today. With only six right-hand-drive Cabriolets ever produced, this particular car is guaranteed to satisfy, whether crushing a racetrack or stealing the show at your local cars and coffee meeting.
