1965 Ford Mustang Convertible K-Code
The Birth of the Pony Car – the 1965 Ford Mustang K-code Convertible
An early Mustang with Shelby DNA—numbers-matching, highly optioned, and beautifully restored in a rare factory color.
This stunning 1965 Ford Mustang Convertible is powered by its original, numbers-matching K-code 289 HiPo V8—the same high-performance engine that powered the legendary Shelby GT350. Mated to its original 4-speed manual transmission, and finished in the elegant factory
Prairie Bronzeover a black interior with a new white power convertible top, this Mustang is one of the finest and most desirable early K-code cars on the market.
The legend of the K-code Mustang
Before the GT350, there was the K-code. Available in limited numbers, the K-code 289 HiPo engine was the top performance option for 1965 and laid the groundwork for the Mustang’s muscle car legacy. With solid lifters, high-compression pistons, a special carburetor, and heavy-duty internals, it was rated at 271 horsepower—far more potent than its badge suggested.
Only a fraction of 1965 Mustangs were ordered with the K-code engine, and fewer still were convertibles. Even fewer survive today with their original, numbers-matching drivetrain intact, making this example both rare and highly collectible.
This car
Restored to a high standard, this Mustang presents beautifully in its original Prairie Bronze Metallic—a sophisticated and seldom-seen color that highlights the car’s crisp lines and timeless elegance. The body is laser-straight with excellent panel fit and finish, complemented by restored chrome, stainless trim, and badging.
The new white convertible top is fully functional and upgraded with an electric power mechanism for easy open-air cruising. Factory-style Magnum 500 wheels complete the classic performance look.
The drivetrain
Under the hood is the original 289ci High Performance V8, verified as the factory-installed, numbers-matching unit. Backed by the original Toploader 4-speed manual transmission, this car offers a pure and engaging driving experience that honors its racing-bred roots.
The engine bay is clean and features proper K-code components including the unique HiPo air cleaner, exhaust manifolds, and high-performance distributor. The car runs strong, sounds incredible, and is tuned for both reliability and spirited street performance.
The interior
Inside, you’ll find a well-restored black bucket seat interior with the rare Rally-Pac gauge cluster—a desirable factory option that adds a tachometer and clock mounted on the steering column. All gauges, lights, and switches are fully functional. The dash, carpets, door panels, and trim have been professionally restored or replaced, keeping true to the original specifications.
