- An exotic-beating Buick unlike anything else offered by an American automaker in its era
In February 2025, rapper Kendrick Lamar kicked off the Super Bowl LIX halftime show on the hood of a Buick GNX, microphone in hand, as dancers poured out of the car’s doors—and even the trunk. A cult classic since its debut, a limited-production GNX was now parked center stage, on center field, during one of the most-watched television events on earth.
But it was not quite what it seemed. The car on stage was in fact a heavily modified Buick Grand National body shell with GNX badging. Lamar likely understood that a real GNX was too rare to sacrifice for theatrics: He owns one of the 547 ultra-high-performance Buicks, produced only for 1987, and his critically acclaimed, record-breaking 2024 album GNX—the fastest rap album to hit two billion streams—is named in reference to the model.
No one has done more than Lamar, coincidentally also born in 1987, to introduce the GNX to a new generation of enthusiasts…and those who look up the specs of the sinister black Buick for the first time are blown away by what they discover. An extremely limited-production one-year-only send-off for the Buick Grand National, itself a high-performance transformation of the Buick Regal, the GNX’s turbocharged V-6 was specially enhanced by ASC McLaren; a Garrett turbo with a ceramic impeller, and a beefed-up intercooler, boosted output to a stated 276 horsepower and 360 pound-feet of torque.
This was a lie, and everyone knew it: Actual horsepower was closer to 300, and torque was correspondingly higher as well. The 0–60 mph sprint took just 4.7 seconds, and on the drag strip, the Buick was found in testing to be quicker in the quarter-mile than a Ferrari F40! Truly, no American production car of this era, and very few since, have had the GNX’s impact.
Compared to the Grand National, produced in much higher numbers, the GNX also had a stiffer body, an upgraded suspension, improved heat management via the aforementioned improved intercooler, a transmission cooler, and an oil cooler, as well as functional fender vents, and unmistakable widened fender flares that accommodated GNX-specific alloy wheels. Inside, the GNX received a special gauge cluster, with Stewart Warner instrumentation emphasizing the model’s performance focus.
The GNX offered here, 095 of 547, was delivered to its first owner via Warren Buick-Peugeot of Rockville Centre, New York, as confirmed by accompanying copies of delivery documentation including a certificate of origin and Bill of Sale, window sticker, and Buick and ASC correspondence. It has been driven a modest 27,627 miles at cataloguing, and it remains in well-preserved condition throughout, with service invoices from 2016 and 2019–2020 on file. Its original signature gray and black cloth interior is complete with a period-correct Novatel car phone!
Rare and exotic, the 1987 Buick GNX’s appeal has never waned since its debut. Its recent time in the Super Bowl halftime spotlight, and the ringing endorsement by one of rap’s most lauded modern voices—and GNX owner—Kendrick Lamar, has only made examples like this even more desirable.
