The original Mini was designed by Alec Issigonis to meet the growing demand for small and economical cars. In the late 1950s, the Suez Crisis caused fuel shortages and increased petrol prices. German midget cars grew in popularity in the UK, although imported cars were still rare at the time. The stubborn and self-willed BMC director Leonard Lord did not like the situation and wanted to challenge the German midget cars. He decided that BMC would create an unprecedented, decent, small family car. In 1959, that is what happened when the Mini was introduced.
This Morris Mini Minor MK I was sold as new to Finland on June 14, 1967 and was in use until 1987, when it was deregistered and left standing in S.Ahtiainen’s barn in Joutseno, South Karelia. The original owner’s manual and the last owner’s registration papers have been preserved.
The car managed to stand in a barn for about 30 years, until at the end of the 2010s the Mini ended up from Joutseno to neighbour village Imatra, where M.Nuora decided to have the car restored. The car has been completely disassembled for restoration and carefully restored, respecting the originality. The body has been restored and painted in the original red and white tones. The thoroughly restored engine is really perky and works great, as does the transmission. The car’s electrical system, including the alternator and ignition parts, the fuel tank and the exhaust system have been renewed. The brakes have been restored and the clutch and brake master cylinders have been renewed.
The interior carpets and floor coverings have been renewed, but the seats are still in extraordinary good original condition.
The car’s restoration was completed in spring 2021, when the car was registered as a historic vehicle. The car will be sold as serviced and with fresh Mot/Tüv inspection made (valid until 2029).
Our family’s enthusiasm for British cars originally stems from especially Minis. My great-uncle Antti Kytölä worked as a mechanic for rally legend Timo Mäkinen. When Timo Mäkinen drove Finland’s first Monte Carlo victories with Mini, everyone had to get their own ones.
Few cars have such a wonderful history in both everyday life and motor racing as the Mini.
The car is located in Vantaa, 25 minutes from Helsinki–Vantaa airport. Views by appointment.
