Presented in March 1966 at the Geneva Motor Show, the Duetto Spider had the difficult task of replacing the legendary Giulietta Spider, which had been launched in 1955 and was renamed the Giulia in 1962, when it received a 1600cc engine and five-speed gearbox. In 1968, the 1.6-litre Duetto made way for the Spider 1750 Veloce, while a 1300cc version known as the ‘Junior’ was also introduced. In 1970, the second series came out: it could be recognised by its Kamm tail (or coda tronca). In 1971, the 2000 replaced the 1750. A year later, a 1600 ‘Junior’ version was reintroduced. In 1983, the third series was presented, referred to as the Spider Aerodinamica or FL (Face Lift). This received various aerodynamic appendages (front and rear spoilers) and larger rear lights, before it was slightly restyled three years later when the luxurious Quadrifoglio Verde version was introduced, weighed down with even more trim. Finally, in 1990, the fourth and final series of the Spider was presented; production of it ended in 1993.

The model which we are offering for sale is a Spider Aerodinamica or FL first registered on 1 June 1983 in the Yvelines ‘département’, to the west of Paris. Its first registration number 5760 TA 78 can be seen etched on the original windscreen with its integrated radio aerial. The car has remained in the Paris area ever since. Since 2015, several mechanical and cosmetic parts have been replaced. The water pump, brake pads, exhaust silencer, all four shock absorbers and the clutch slave cylinder are all virtually new. The car has been completely repainted and we could find no trace of corrosion, either in the wheelarches or on the underbody, which is quite unusual on these models. A valuation report dated 2016 refers to a convertible which is “generally very sound”. The seats are in good condition and you can almost hear a tune from Paolo Conte coming from the period Grundig radio. This is an affordable Alfa Romeo Spider, which will take you back to the Italy of the 1980s, the wind in your hair as you drive along the Amalfi coast!
