Autech Zagato Stelvio, true to its name, is a handcrafted luxury sports coupé jointly developed by Autech Japan—a Nissan subsidiary specialising in the manufacture and sale of special investigation vehicles—and the prestigious Carrozzeria Zagato. It was released in 1989 as a limited-edition model.

Led by Shinichiro Sakurai, known as the “Father of the Skyline”, Autech Japan based the project on the F31 Leopard platform. This involved shortening the overall length by over 300mm, significantly modifying the door areas to accommodate a wider body, reinforced brakes, revised suspension damping, and strengthened mounting points and the area around the side steps. This involved modifications to the chassis and a tune-up based on the VG30DET engine. Through a full engine balancing process, the development of bespoke components such as a Garrett turbocharger, intercooler, and oil cooler, alongside revisions to the fuel delivery system and intake/exhaust systems, it boasted power performance rivalling the supercars of the era, such as the Ferrari Testarossa and Porsche 930 Turbo, which were its benchmarks at the time.

The drivetrain and engine unit, is then transported to the Zagato factory headquarters. Here, skilled craftsmen employ traditional handcrafted techniques from the golden age, characteristic of Italy's renowned coachbuilders. This includes forming the body shell from hammered aluminium alloy, shaping the distinctive carbon fibre bonnet with integrated wing mirrors, crafting the interior with walnut and full leather upholstery, and the application of beautiful lacquer paint. Employing traditional handcrafted methods from a bygone era, carried out by skilled artisans befitting a prestigious Italian coachbuilder, resulted in interiors as luxurious as those of a contemporary Maserati and a body as stylish as an Alfa Romeo. This process fully showcased the distinctive originality and uniqueness characteristic of Zagato.
