Description

Inspired by early sketches penned by Dutch automobile importer Ben Pon, the Volkswagen Type 2 was approved for production by Volkswagen’s newly appointed CEO Heinz Nordhoff in May 1949. Few, if anyone, associated with the project could have possibly predicted the cultural impact of this strange Type 1 “Beetle” derivative, which soon blossomed into a myriad of models ranging from the “Kombi” and “Commercial” to the “Microbus” in 1950 and “Deluxe Microbus” by 1951. Arriving in 1951, the fun and festive Samba Transporter, known in America as the Sunroof Deluxe, was the most luxurious of the Type 2 lineup, with two-tone paint finishes, a large sliding canvas sunroof, and no less than 23 windows through 1963 and 21 windows to the end of original Type 2 production in 1967. Beloved by families and scores of traveling hippies, the Samba continues to enjoy a decidedly avant-garde, counterculture-inspired aura today.

Added to The Richard Donner Collection in 2008 from noted VW enthusiast Leon Tomasyan, this 1962 Volkswagen 23-Window Samba Transporter recalls one of the vehicles owned during the noted producer’s early days. Showing under 99,600 miles at the time of cataloguing, it sports a Sealing Wax Red and white two-tone exterior finish, complemented by over-rider bumpers, pop-out ‘Safari’ windshield, retractable canvas sunroof, and gray vinyl interior with three-row seating. Ample power is delivered with the updated 1600 cc four-cylinder dual-port engine and four-speed “Freeway Flyer” transaxle. Choice additional features include a 12V electrical conversion, period Sapphire AM radio, and chrome factory wheel covers mounted on wheels carrying radial tires. This lovely bus is a wonderful example of a true motoring icon, ready to enjoy with friends and family.
