Description

This stunning 1965 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Convertible was built on March 16, 1965, finished in the rare and desirable color of Sea Sand, the same color it remains today. Karmann Ghia Convertibles such as this are quite rare. 1,174,087 Volkswagen passenger cars were built in 1965 but only 5,326 were Karmann Ghia Convertibles. The Volkswagen was acquired by the previous owner in 2015 after approximately 28 years of storage. A subsequent yearlong refurbishment included an exterior repaint and interior refresh; the replacement of the floor pans; rebuilds of the engine and transaxle; along with overhauls of the suspension, brake, and electrical systems.

The previous owner’s intent was to keep the car as original as possible, with only non-repairable parts replaced and every effort made to find the original Volkswagen parts or to refurbish the existing parts. Upgrades such as seat belts, increased engine displacement to 1,384 cc and the 15" x 4.5" Porsche-style wheels were done to enhance driveability and safety. Some original parts such as door handles, headlight rings, windshield trim, switches, shifter knob, gauges, radio fascia, and dash knobs do show light patina but are original to the car and in great shape, adding to the character of the restoration.

A valve adjustment and oil change were performed last year. To find a Karmann Ghia Convertible in good condition today is quite difficult, but one restored to this level in such a rare original color is an opportunity not to be missed.
