You might think that Volvo only ever made spacious and practical cars. Not so as this Volvo P 1800 E clearly demonstrates, making it one of the most stylish coupés of its time. Being a Volvo it also happens to be very reliable and great to drive. Volvo introduced the 2+2 in 1961 because it saw market potential for a sports coupé in Europe and America. Following on from his involvement in the PV444, Helmer Petterson lead the development. At the time it was rumoured that his son Pelle thought up the design under the watchful eye of Pietro Frua. The first three prototypes from 1957 and 1958 were built by Frua.

Initially the P1800 had a 4-cylinder 1800cc twin SU carburettor engine that was increased to 2 litres later on. In 1970 they introduced the 1800 E which what we now feel has the great advantage of an Einspritzung courtesy of a Bosch D-Jetronic Injection system all-round disc brakes and a new camshaft. Without increased fuel consumption the power was boosted to 130 hp.

The Volvo P1800 is more of a GT than a sportscar and that implies that many a P1800 is used as much as its practical larger Volvo siblings. Our P1800 featured on camera comes from 1972, the last production year. Normally you would not expect us to shout about a mileage of 345,600 km n(216,000 miles), but true Volvo enthusiasts know it is barely out of nappies. Stronger still in 1998 a certain Iry Gordon managed to enter the Guinness Book of World Records with his P1800 by having travelled the longest distance logged in a car

with 3,25 million miles (about 5,2 million km). So we can safely say you still have a reserve of some 4,8 million km in this one.

To be honest you would not know the mileage from just looking at the car. This restored Silver-Grey coupé looks great. The paintwork is nice and fresh and, simply put, the rest of the external attributes are also in similar shape. Brightwork, rubbers, lighting and windows are all exceedingly neat. Inside the theme continues with very nice black seats with white piping, a neat dashboard featuring brushed aluminium detailing.

Mechanically this Volvo P1800 E is as fresh as a daisy. The gearbox works accurately and the B20 engine runs as you know a Volvo does: supple and everlasting. Looking to buy a trouble free, stylish and fun classic coupé? This P1800 could well be your best choice.
