Is it true Volvo only used to make spacious and practical cars? Not at all! This Volvo P1800 E is one of the most elegant coupés of its time. It is also a very reliable and enjoyable drive. Volvo introduced the 2+2 model in 1961 because the Swedish carmaker saw a market for a sporty coupé in Europe and America. Helmer Petterson led the project, having previously been responsible for the Volvo PV444.
Initially, the P1800 was equipped with an 1800cc four-cylinder engine with twin SU carburettors, but later, the displacement was increased to 2 litres. In 1970, heralded a time for an update, now considered a significant improvement. Volvo introduced the P1800 E, where "E" stands for Einspritzung, meaning injection. The carburettors were replaced with a Bosch D-tronic injection system and a new camshaft. As a result, the output increased to 130 hp, without negatively affecting fuel consumption. Another modification for that year was the addition of disc brakes all around.
The Volvo P1800 is more of a grand tourer (GT) than a sports car, which means many P1800s are used by their owners as much as any practical models from the brand. The P1800 E you see here is from 1970 and has recently arrived in the Netherlands from Sweden. The car was expertly restored in Sweden and still looks magnificent.
The body, in the well-known blue metallic finish, gives the P1800 a very stylish and beautiful appearance. The paint thickness meter indicates no excessive filler or issues are to be found with the Volvo. The bodywork is in optimal condition, and so is the paintwork. The panel gaps are as they should be on the Swedish coupé, and it all adds up to a very appealing overall look for the car.
The interior is also very tidy, with both the black leather upholstery and the carpets looking exceptionally fresh. The same goes for the door cards and dashboard with its wood veneer; everything in this Swedish car is in excellent condition. The dashboard houses the necessary gauges, all of which, of course, function as they should. The controls also work perfectly. It's a very pleasant space to be in.
The B20 engine under the hood of the P1800 is in excellent condition. The two-litre engine is pleasantly torquey and provides sufficient power to give the 'GT' a sporty performance. For added comfort, there is an overdrive present. The gearbox shifts with precision, and the B20 engine runs just as you would expect from a Volvo: smoothly and reliably. If you're looking to buy a trouble-free, classy, and enjoyable classic coupé, then this P1800 E might just be the best choice for you.
