Description
The Amazon was presented in autumn 1956. It boasted a water cold engine installed in the front and the chassis of the PV 544 with the same wheelbase. The then fashionable ponton shape was designed by the Swede Jan Wilsgaard in the factories new design department and he obviously took quite a lot of cues from the Alfa Romeo 1900. In March 1958, the Amazon S (P 122 S) was presented with an engine with twin carburettors providing 83 horsepower. In August 1961, the engine capacity was raised from 1.6 litre “B16” to 1.8 litre “B18” and the crankshaft with three main bearings was upgraded to five bearings. At the same time a 12 Volt electrical system and front disc brakes where available for the Amazon S, with the less powerful versions receiving those at a later stage. The 122 S saloon offered, one of 26’400 examples built in 1964 with its indestructible B18 engine and 90 horsepower, is a Swiss delivery and was first registered on the 1st May 1964. The history of this robust Swede is not known but it seems to have led a leisurely life and was always well cared for. The coachwork probably received a repaint in its original colour years ago, whereas the floor still seems original with no welding repairs visible and we assume that the car was not really used during wintertime. The original interior is lovingly maintained, only showing an age-correct patina which would let us assume that the 55’800 kilometres correspond with the actual mileage. As can be expected, the B18 engine is running perfectly, and the four-speed gearbox is shifting well. In 2016 the Volvo was taken over by its last owner but has since only been driven around 2’000 kilometres and consequently presents itself in good, well-maintained and very original condition the most recent veteran MOT was completed in May 2025 allowing the Volvo to be registered immediately.
