Description

  • Highly original and correct car
  • Odometer displays under 22,000 miles from new, believed to be actual
  • Desirable Damson Red over Beige color scheme
  • 2.5-liter inline-six and four-speed manual transmission; twin Stromberg carburetors
  • An excellent example of one of Triumph’s best-loved models

With its sports cars being fitted only with four-cylinder engines for the preceding decade and a half, Triumph introduced a six-cylinder engine to extend the life and improve the performance of the beloved TR series. Similar to the earlier four-cylinder TR4A—the first TR with independent rear suspension—but with Triumph's 2.5-liter, six-cylinder engine installed in place of the old 2.1-liter four, the TR5 was produced during the 1968 model year only (October 1967 to November 1968) pending the arrival of the TR6.

Restyled for 1969 by Karmann of Osnabruck, the TR6 sported a full-width nose and squared-off tail. Under the skin the chassis remained basically the same as its independently-rear-suspended TR4A predecessor, while the 2.5-liter power unit was unchanged. Handling was improved over that of the TR5 courtesy of wider wheels and a front anti-roll bar.

For the sports car enthusiast in the early 1970s, the TR6 offered speed, a throaty engine note, a smooth four-speed gearbox, and exceptional road handling housed in a masculine, convertible body. Nearly 50 years after the design was penned, the TR6 is still considered to be one of the quintessential and most desirable cars from the legendary Coventry manufacturer.

This handsome 1972 TR6 has been driven under 22,000 miles since new, verified by its Virginia title. Finished attractively in Damson (burgundy) with Beige interior, the overall condition of this Triumph reflects the miles on the odometer. Highly original and detailed even under the hood with correct hoses and clamps, this roadster presents beautifully. Some of the notable features on this TR6 are four new 15-inch Yokohama radial tires mounted on correct original rally wheels, two sets of floor mats (one rubber, one carpet), two car custom covers, factory original TR6 handbook, correct black tonneau cover, AM/FM radio, and convertible top boot cover.

Good for 120 mph with acceleration to match, the six-cylinder TRs are arguably the most exciting Triumphs ever made, continuing to enjoy an enthusiastic following worldwide and an excellent network of spare parts and service providers. To view this car and others currently consigned to this auction, please visit the RM website at rmsothebys.com/en/auctions/hf21.
