When it launched the TR2 in March 1953, Triumph was on to a winning formula despite involving a redesign of the stillborn TR1’s chassis that was completed in just weeks. Simple and rugged yet with good and reliable performance at an affordable price, the TR2 was everyone’s sports car. Producing 90bhp at 4300rpm, the 1991cc four cylinder could propel the TR2 to 60mph in 11.9 seconds and on to a top speed of 103mph via the four speed gearbox.
Triumph’s hopes that the car would be successful in competition were soon realised, the first of many notable results being a win on the 1954 RAC Rally. A TR2 prototype, driven by Ken Richardson, and with special under tray and rear wheel spats, also achieved an average 124mph during high speed runs at Jabekke in Belgium.
