Description

"The ‘Stag’ name was a development codename allocated when the design project was initiated by Giovanni Michelotti in 1965. None of the subsequent names suggested through the process were ever deemed more compelling, 55 years later, the Triumph Stag still occupies one of the cornerstones of the collector’s car market. The svelte Michelotti styling married to decadent V8 power makes this model both beautiful to look at and enormous fun to drive. Add to that a thriving club network, these cars make for hugely desirable ownership.
First registered on 11th November 1972, this early Mk. I Triumph Stag has just benefitted from a bare metal respray by a retired automotive painter, (the hardtop has also been painted). When stripping the car, he was impressed by the lack of rust and how solid the car was generally. Built from thicker, better quality steel, the early Stag’s often suffer less with the dreaded rust than many of the later cars. The vendor wished to restore the car without changing parts just for the sake of it, maintaining its originality as best he could. With this in mind, having inspected the engine and found that it was in very good condition, a thorough service was all that was required. The only parts of the engine that required a little more attention was the fitting of a more desirable ‘larger core’ radiator and a new fan as well as having the carburettors stripped, cleaned and rebuilt. The fuel tank, alternator and fuel pump were also all replaced as a matter of cause. The vendor reports that the car runs and drives very well. The same approach was taken with the original interior, which was in remarkable condition. It has benefitted from new carpets, new bolsters and diaphragms on the front seats and the hood has been replaced as well at a reported cost of over £2,000. New chrome bumpers, along with freshly refurbished wheels and many other details all help this car stand out from the crowd.
Supplied with its UK V5C registration document, previous MoT test certificates dating back to 1980, many receipts from both its past and its most recent restoration, along with its freshly repainted hardtop. Good condition Stags can be hard to come by, let alone early cars making this car a very attractive example to anyone looking to enjoy the ‘top down’ V8 bliss of a well sorted Stag.
