Gazoo Racing: fun and power Yaris GR

When you think of Toyota, the first thing you probably think of is an Aygo or a Prius. Efficient? Definitely. But exciting for us as real car enthusiasts? Anything but. Yet the Japanese brand manages to surprise time and time again. Especially if they bring a real driver’s car to the market. Various examples from the past prove that they can make them very well. This time the collaboration with Tommi Mäkinen Racing resulted in the Yaris GR. The GR stands for Gazoo Racing, and promises nothing but fun and power. This Yaris is – unlike the ‘average’ Yaris – a three-door, with styleless doors, considerably increased in width and no less than 9.1 cm lower than its slower brothers. If you come across one, you will see it immediately. Its face looks wonderfully aggressive with the accent on the large square, black honeycomb grille. On both sides of it you will find large air scoops.

The GR Yaris immediately shows that it is not to be messed with. It is an easy car for people who are not very good at choosing. All the choosing work has already been done for you: the standard equipment is sublime. You also don’t have to worry about a color for long, since you can only choose from three colors. Precious Black, Platinum Pearl White or Emotional Red. Our car has the Precious Black paint and the many accents and curvaceous shape of the car make it look great. Our car is equipped with the ‘must have’ Performance Pack, which includes: beautiful 18 inch 10 spoke alloys with Michelin Pilot Sports 4s tires, red brake calipers, and most importantly; the Torsen differentials. This allows you to optimally control the distribution of the drive, up to 70% to the rear axle and 30% at the front. What do you mean to drive spectacularly…? To further enhance its lightweight image, the GR Yaris has a carbon roof, which also improves its looks. The rear also proves that the GR Yaris has more horsepower to give, because what hips! And that for a hatchback.

Toyota’s sleek light signature can also be seen on this Yaris. The rear lights are connected to each other with a black band and thus separate the reverse and tailgate. At the bottom you will find a subtle diffuser and a double exhaust. Behind the privacy glass lies a sleek and well-proportioned interior, which is fully equipped. Think of a leather steering wheel, suede sports seats, a leather gear lever and suede door panels. Add a GR steering wheel emblem and red stitching and that’s all you need in this hot hatch. The seat is a bit high, but personally we like it for a good overview of the road.

It really is a car that ‘attracts’ you. Not too big, not too small, and you quickly feel familiar with the car. That is also necessary because anyone who wants to enjoy his bizarre performance must feel, so to speak, comfortable. Bizarre? Yes, sure it is, because the 1.6-liter three-cylinder turbo engine produces no less than 261 hp. At 1,280 kg. The GR Yaris can therefore call itself one of the most powerful hot hatches ever. Because what a speed this Japanese has. As soon as you press the accelerator and move towards high speeds with the six-speed manual transmission, you are pushed into your leather sports seat. The gears of the gearbox are short, which makes the driving experience even sportier. Whining at the revs, downshifting early: he loves it. The turbo and exhaust are roaribing with pleasure. It seems like this car just wants to go faster, harder and harder. Really very astonishing. The feeling of endorphins and adrenaline rushing through your body when you use the power strongly is incredibly addictive. It sticks to the road like chewing gum and devours corners, partly due to the Torsen differentials, as if it were a snack. This is also due to the weight distribution. For example, the battery is now in the luggage compartment. In addition, the roof is made of carbon and the doors and tailgate are made of aluminum.

The fact that the power is distributed across all four wheels also helps with performance. The GR Yaris uses electronically controlled, permanent four-wheel drive, called GR-FOUR. This system has been specially developed for this car and offers three modes: Normal, Sport and Track. Each position affects the power distribution between the front and rear wheels. In the normal position, 60 percent goes to the front axle and 40 percent to the rear axle. However, in sport mode, as mentioned, you can send up to 70 percent of the power to the rear axle. In Track mode the power is divided 50/50. The driving experience cannot possibly be compared to, for example, the Yaris GRMN. On top of all these goodies, Toyota also applies extra stiffness to the lightweight body, in the form of 13% more welding points and approximately 24% more structural glue. As a result, the car’s yaw response, steering feedback and grip feel have been improved, further enhancing the already stiff and highly rewarding chassis.

The line between a genius and a madman is often razor-thin. This Toyota Yaris proves this, which does a convincing impression of a rally car and walks a tightrope exactly on that line. Something like this is guaranteed to produce memorable rides. There are those experiences that are so unbelievable that you already know that you will never forget them for the rest of your life. Letting the rear of a Toyota Yaris overtake the front under power halfway through a bend is one of those. Again: with a Yaris – but of course not an ordinary one. Apart from its name, the headlight units and the exterior mirrors, the hottest of all Yaris has nothing to do with its namesakes. It’s as if the Toyota encourages you to keep your right foot pressed against the bulkhead. After all, that’s how they do it in rallying. Actually, the intention was to use this road version as an above-average starting point for a competition car. From the start of the development of the Toyota GR Yaris, it was clear that this would not be just another hot hatchback. In terms of technology and design, this car could directly benefit from the championship experience of Toyota GAZOO Racing in the World Rally Championship (WRC).
