The Toyota Land Cruiser is a special car ever since its introduction in the early 50’s. The Land cruiser can do anything and stay in one piece at the same time. Typically Toyota and in the years to follow that reliability only improved, which sadly could not always be said for the competition. The J40 came along in 1960 as the third series Land Cruiser and stayed in production for many decennia.
In 1978 you could chose from a petrol engine (FJ40) or a diesel engine (BJ40). The first owner of the Land Cruiser you see here chose for the latter, the BJ40. A highly durable, torque rich and reliable 3.0 diesel with 80 hp.
The first owner was a Dutchman making this a Dutch registered vehicle. This was quite exceptional as not many Land Cruisers were sold in Holland at the time and then most were exported to countries in hard need of these omnipotent cars.

In 1978 the car was supplied to Louwman and Parqui as the sticker under the bonnet shows. Back then the Land Cruiser had a Dune Beige finish as most of its ilk. After a long life in the Netherlands the vehicle underwent an extensive restoration preparing this Toyota for a new life. During the restoration the four-by-four was given a nice new shiny suit in anthracite grey. The bodywork looks glorious with correct alignment, doors that shut properly and every seam straight and neat. Hinges, suspension parts, bumpers, mountings and rubbers are all pristine. At the same time the car was given broader wheel arches, wide steel wheels clad in enormous Goodyear Wrangler tyres, an exhaust snorkel and a winch. This gave the car a modern appearance whilst loosing none of its authentic classic character. A beautiful marriage of old and young.

Inside the theme continues: pristine where ever you look. The comfortable light-grey upholstered seats are new as is the headlining. The many switches and instrument panel all take us back to the late 70’s. Please note the absence of a rear bench due to the Dutch grey licence plate. Functionality is a key word for Toyota and the drive can be similarly described with amusing coming a quick second.
This Land Cruiser is thoroughly maintained. A typical case of it can do everything but it would nearly be a shame to let him do any hard labour. Fortunately the Toyota is ultimately fit to make normal journeys in, thanks in part to its very supple 3-lire diesel engine. The sturdy diesel starts with a slight turn of the key before effortlessly getting on with the task in hand. With the long gearstick the 4-speed (earlier versions had a gear less) shifts with ease and driving the Land Cruiser is as easy as pie. The large 3-litre four cylinder has been perfectly maintained and is totally fool proof. More character and comfort will be hard to find in another classic off-roader. An added benefit for Dutch owners is that due its age it can enter any environment zone as well as being exempt form road tax.

Inspecting underneath this car is a lot easier than with most of our stock and shows this BJ40 leaves nothing further to be desired. Looking at the floor, sills and cross beams you can appreciate the good quality work of the restoration. Shock breakers and leaf springs have also been replaced.

In other words this is not just an object of desire it also makes a sensible choice for the entrepreneur who wants to stand out whilst out on business.
