Shelby released the GT350 in 1965. The car was essentially a street legal race car. For the 1966 model, the GT350 became more comfortable with the addition of an automatic transmission and rear seats. That same year, the Hertz Corporation offered the Shelby GT350H in their rental lineup. The cars became known as “Rent-A-Racers.” Anyone could simply go to a Hertz rental agency and have a car to take to the drag strip or race track. After Hertz was done with the cars, they were returned to Ford, reconditioned, at which time the cars were then sold to the public.

In 1967 the GT350 went through its first restyling that lasted through the 1968 model year. It featured larger hood and side scoops, headlights mounted in the grille, rear-quarter scoops and the addition of a spoiler. In 1968, Ford took over control of GT350 production, marketing and advertising. Production was moved from California to Michigan, where the GT350s were built alongside the standard Mustang. These are rare vehicles, one source states that in 1968 Shelby only produced 224 Shelby GT350H fastbacks.

This 1968 Shelby GT350 Hertz is presented in black with gold stripe along each rocker panel. The car is powered by a 302-cid V-8 engine which is paired to an automatic transmission. Power equipment on the car includes steering and brakes. The interior of the car is completed in black with wood accents. It features bucket seats, center console, air conditioning and an AM radio.

This GT350 Hertz has a documented history in the SAAC registry. It was originally shipped to Bill Watkins Ford, Inc. in Scottsdale Arizona on 2/4/68 in preparation for Hertz. Included in the car’s SAAC write-up are services completed early on in the car’s life. According to the registry, previous owners include A.W. Amanns, Melvin Miller, and Peter Dahl. Included with the car is a full Marti Report.
