Although Salmson turned to pump manufacturing in the 1960s, it is probably best known for car production, which started in 1919 and ended in 1957. Between 1921 and 1928 Salmson was very active in motor sport and won no less than 550 races and set 10 world records before the closure of the racing department in 1929. Introduced in 1929, the S4 series was the company’s longest running model, surviving until the early 1950s in various guises before car manufacturing finally ended for this historic company. Technically, Salmsons were quite advanced and some models featured a twin overhead camshaft engine, no doubt propelling these light cars to impressive speeds.
