The Rolls-Royce Silver Dawn, rarest of all post-war models with only 760 built over a six year period, was revolutionary for the company in being the first model to be available with a factory designed Crewe-built body. It shared its chassis and mechanical specification with the Bentley Mark VI and subsequently the R-Type.
The only major mechanical changes came in May 1951 when engine capacity was increased to 4,566cc and the by-pass oil filter system substituted for one using a full-flow layout. The same year, the Bentley Mark VI was joined by the R-Type, basically the same vehicle but with a longer and larger boot.
