Description

The Lynx Tourer presented here is a four-seat, two-door open sports model that was only produced for about one year in 1933. It was powered by a high-output engine of the same specification as Riley's Sprites and Brooklands sports models, with sports camshafts, sports specification intake and exhaust manifolds, and a forward four-speed manual floor shift transmission.

Introduced in 1926 by the British company Riley and produced until 1938, the Nine was a highly successful 1100 cc class small car with a sporty character. A key factor in its success was the inclusion of an elaborate mechanism for the 1100 cc class, aimed at users who wanted a high-quality, sporty small car. The car was also available in a wide range of body variants, from a lightweight four-door saloon to a four-seat convertible and even a race-ready two-seat sports car.
 
The 'Nine' model name, which gave the car its name, refers to the British taxable horsepower (1100 cc displacement class), and the engine is an in-line four-cylinder with a total displacement of 1087 cc (60.3 x 95.2 mm). The engine symbolises the elaborate construction that is Riley's motto. It uses the so-called 'twin cam' system to form a hemispherical combustion chamber. The difference with modern DOHC engines is that the Riley has two camshafts on either side of the crankcase, but the design concept remains the same: high intake and exhaust efficiency for high reliability and high power output. The ladder-shaped chassis is also more robust than that of British cars in the same class. This provides high chassis rigidity and a reliable driving feel for the driver.

This 'RV 3333' has a complete history from the first owner to the present day. A full restoration by British specialists was completed in 2017. According to the on-board record book, a total of GBP 100,000 was spent, the careful and meticulous nature of the work would justify the price.
 
The restoration work was carried out by Blue Diamond, a renowned Riley specialist, with the participation of specialists in various fields, and all mechanical aspects such as the engine, transmission and drive train were restored. The chassis and body were separated, the wood frame was restored, the body was sheet-metal restored and the body was finished in maroon to replicate the original condition.

This rare British 1933 Riley 9-Lynx tourer, 'RV 3333', came to Tokyo after it was completed and caught the eye of a vintage British car enthusiast in Japan. The car has been inspected and has been maintained by a vintage car specialist since it arrived in Japan.

The Lynx remained open-bodied for the 1934 model year, but the sportiness of the car was diluted when it was remodelled as a four-door, so the 1933-only two-door tourer is a rare and popular find. It is a gem of the vintage period that can be enjoyed from the day you get it, touring or at classic car events.
