- A legendary model in French motor sport
In 1962 Renault launched the R8, one of the first French cars to feature 4 disc brakes. 2 years later, at the 1964 Paris Motor Show, Renault presented its new R8 Gordini. The Gordini was the first Renault car to be tuned by a professional: the Italian-born tuner Amédée Gordini. A genuine small competition car, it was the first racing car to be accessible to the general public, thanks to a price that was typical of the market at the time. This affordable racing car was to become an icon thanks to the many competitions in which the Gordini took part (whether in rallies or hill-climbs with drivers such as Andruet, Ragnotti, etc.). Unlike the original R8, the Gordini had a displacement of 1,108 cm3 and a power output of 77.5 hp DIN (95 hp SAE) thanks to a hemispherical cylinder head (V-valves and central spark plugs) and two horizontal Weber twin-barrel carburettors. As a result, top speed reached 170 km/h, making the R8 Gordini one of the fastest French cars of its day. The mechanical gearbox has 5 gears.
The car in this sale is in beautiful condition. The engine has been completely rebuilt, as has the chassis, bodywork and interior. The Weber carburettors are in good condition. Delta Mic rims have been fitted for improved roadholding. The engine delivers an enchanting sound that will appeal to the most demanding enthusiasts. It is rare to find an R8 Gordini in this state of restoration on the market today.
