Ray Formula cars have been around since 1970 and have had success from the start. Bert Ray was a mechanic for Brabham alongside Denny Hulme and in 1968 set up Ray Race working with many of the racing firms in the London area.
In 1971 complete FFs were being produced and in 1972 American Jas Patterson raced a Ray Steele 72F at the first Formula Ford Festival in October. Stephen South, a former British kart champion, 1977 British Formula Three Champion and McLaren F1 driver subbing for an injured Alain Prost, was 1973’s big find and he won 5 races finishing 3rd in the Wella for Men championship and 4th in the BOC series. In 1974 South had 11 wins and was 2nd in the BOC champ
