A technological showcase for Porsche, and first presented as a concept at the Paris Motor Show in 2000, the Carrera GT was sold between 2003 and 2006. This extraordinary supercar was designed to compete with the Ferrari Enzo, Mercedes SLR and Ford GT. It has all the means to do so, starting with a breath-taking performance. Capable of 0 to 100 km/h in 3,9' and 0 to 200 km/h in 9,9', the car boasts a top speed of 330 km/h. In the sequence of Porsche supercars, the car followed the 959, and received a body that was elegant, yet aggressively sporty. The four covered headlights, side air intake and streamlined profile reference earlier machines such as the Spider 550 and 917 that played a key role in the marque's racing history. The double bubble roof that extends over the engine cover is also inspired by competition cars. Beneath this cover is a 5.7 litre 40-valve V10 engine producing 612 bhp at 8 000 rpm. The car employs technical solutions tried and tested in endurance racing, a distillation of the Stuttgart marque's unrivalled experience. The aerodynamics are highly sophisticated: a rear wing raises at 120 km/h, and the floor shape generates downforce that increases with the speed. Attention was paid to keeping the weight down to no more than 1 380 kg, by extensive use of composite materials like carbon fibre, and, for the extremely rigid chassis, a carbon fibre reinforced plastic (CFP) developed by Porsche. The lightweight ceramic clutch and brakes offer efficiency and resistance.
The Carrera GT, a race car adapted for road use, also offers comfort and equipment. In a cabin containing carbon fibre, leather and galvanised magnesium, passengers benefit from air conditioning, a sophisticated audio system and GPS. The two-part carbon fibre roof is retractable, offering an open drive in good weather. Power steering makes driving more comfortable, and there are various electronic assistance systems: ABS for the brakes, traction control and anti-skid. For those wanting an added thrill, or for track use, these systems can be switched off.
This Carrera GT has a clear history and was delivered new in Vienna, Austria on 25 June 2005. The service book shows that it has been scrupulously maintained. On 19 June 2007, at 5661 km, and on 7 July 2009, at 15,638 km, the car was serviced by the dealer in Vienna. The next two services in November 2011 and in 2015 were carried out by Porsche Steiermark. Between these two dates, the car covered only 1000 km. A major service was carried out on 26 March 2018 at 17,581 km. The current owner, a prominent collector from a family of enthusiasts, lives in the Val-d'Oise, where his Carrera GT is garaged alongside some 20 cars, including an F40, the magnificently restored Dino bought new by his grandfather, and the race cars which he drove at the 24 Hours of Le Mans in 2012 and 2014. In 2021, he made the return trip to Le Mans to attend the 24-Hour race, the only long journey he undertook with the car. Its interior has a sublime combination of black leather and carbon-fibre, and naturally it is fitted with its original Becker Online Pro radio/GPS. Equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport tyres, it will be supplied with all its books and invoices. We had the opportunity to see this marvellous car being driven and were entranced as its V10 climbed through the revs with the sound of a Formula 1 engine. A member of the very select club of exceptional supercars, fewer than 1300 Carrera GTs were built. With only 19,673 km recorded (on the day of our photoshoot) since it left the factory and a paint scheme which makes it all the more exclusive, this Carrera GT is in superb condition: it is highly collectable and will make lovers of fine cars dream for many generations to come.
