THIS CAR
A stunning expression of Porsche’s extensive development work, technical excellence, and unwavering competitiveness, the 959 continues to electrify car enthusiasts today. The 959 demonstrated the basic 911’s amazing potential and future direction with incredibly sophisticated technical specifications, exotic lightweight materials, cutting-edge aerodynamics, and shattering all-around performance.

Development followed the change at Porsche’s executive office after 1980 when Ernst Fuhrmann was replaced as company chairman by Peter Schutz, who favored intensive development of the 911. The initial result was a one-off, all-wheel-drive 911 at the 1981 Frankfurt show, followed there in 1983 by the twin-turbo “Gruppe B,” inspired by the wildly popular FIA rally class.

Racing provided the ideal environment to develop the all-wheel drivetrain, following Porsche’s change in focus from the World Rally Championship to long-distance rallies. The effectiveness of Porsche’s tireless development was confirmed by 1984 Paris-Dakar winners René Metge and Dominique Lemoyne, who won that punishing event in Porsche’s 953, a highly modified 911. For the 1985 Paris-Dakar, Porsche’s entry debuted the 959-type six-speed gearbox with the Carrera 3.2 engine, and by 1986, the works Paris-Dakar cars neared the final 959 specifications with their twin-turbo engines, which propelled Lemoyne/Metge to another victory. These high-profile international victories heightened anticipation for the 959, reaching a fever pitch at its 1985 Frankfurt debut.

A stunning demonstration of engineering prowess, the 959 was based upon a highly modified galvanized body shell derived from the 930 Turbo, but radically modified and updated. The lightweight composite body parts of the 959 marked the first automotive production use of DuPont Kevlar aramid fibers, with aluminum utilized for the doors and front lid, while the nose cap was made of polyurethane. Extensive wind-tunnel testing resulted in zero lift, high downforce, and optimal cooling airflow. Underpinnings featured three ride-height settings and three shock-dampening settings. Brakes included microprocessor-controlled ABS, augmented by ventilated, cross-drilled discs. Tires were of run-flat design.

The 959’s 2,849 cc flat-six engine featured water-cooled cylinder heads, twin sequential turbochargers, and intercooling, resulting in 450 bhp at 6,500 rpm, with power transmitted through an electronically controlled all-wheel-drive system. Top speed was nearly 200 mph, with acceleration from rest to 60 mph in just 3.6 seconds. Even at $300,000 new, the per-car cost was actually twice that, inspiring the 959’s status as “Porsche’s gift to its favorite customers.”

Most 959s were purchased new by the rich and famous, and this original French-specification example is no exception, having been factory-finished in Silver Metallic over special-order “Leather to Sample” upholstery in black. Other factory options included heated sport seats with electric height adjustment, and a security alarm.

The 959 was delivered new via Sonauto Porsche France to the original owner, who is understood to be a well-known VIP and political leader; however, the original delivery details are somewhat limited and research is continuing in an effort to confirm the owner’s identity. In 1992, it was sold to Werner Wollet of Germany at only 1,465 km, and in 1999 it was purchased by Bruno Scarpellini of Italy at just 8,894 km. The consignor acquired this 959 from Mr. Scarpellini at 27,955 km (17,370 miles). It was next imported to the US, and titled in Florida.

During 2015, the 959 received comprehensive service work totaling over $32,000, with records available for inspection. Offered in highly original condition, this 959 benefits from excellent care and limited use, bearing all the earmarks of a properly maintained, 29,000 km car. Accompanying items include a jack, tool kit, owner’s manual, air compressor, emergency warning triangle, and service book. Documentation includes the aforementioned certificate of authenticity from Porsche, service history with receipts, a Porsche parts list binder and workshop manual, and receipts for the major service work performed during 2015.

Unmodified, original-specification 959s are extremely rare finds in the US. With its extremely low mileage, limited ownership roster, and outstandingly well-preserved condition, this 959 provides an exceptional opportunity to acquire one of the finest available.
