Description

The most powerful production 944, with 250 hp
Timeless all-black colour combination
Extensive recent service history
33-point inspection by Porsche Munich
A thoroughly credible 44,000 kilometres
In 1981, Porsche conducted something of a field test at Le Mans. The 924 GTP driven by Walter Röhrl and Jürgen Barth was, in essence, a turbocharged preview of the 944. Then, in 1985, Zuffenhausen put the 944 Turbo into production. The beautifully balanced transaxle sports car had become a seriously quick machine.
The ingredients were already there. The 944 was conceptually based on the 924, but with wider arches and a more muscular stance, it carried itself with considerably greater confidence. Its four-cylinder engine sat up front, the gearbox at the rear. The resulting near-perfect weight distribution gave it handling capable of embarrassing considerably more exotic machinery. And between the two, driver and passengers sat surprisingly comfortably.
The Turbo added the performance to match. Its 2.5-litre four-cylinder engine gained a KKK turbocharger and initially produced 220 hp. That was enough for around 245 km/h, putting the 944 Turbo firmly into territory where it could make life uncomfortable for considerably more expensive sports cars. Naturally, there were larger brakes, revised suspension and a smoother, more aerodynamic nose as well. Porsche had not simply bolted on a turbo; it had developed the entire car around it.
In 1988 came the Turbo S, with 250 hp, larger brakes, a limited-slip differential and an even sharper chassis. What began as a special model soon became the new standard: from 1989, the regular 944 Turbo also produced 250 hp. Nearly 260 km/h was now possible, settling once and for all the question of whether four cylinders necessarily meant playing second fiddle.
The 944 Turbo did without the grand gesture of the 911 and the luxury of the 928. Instead, it was balanced, usable, remarkably practical and, as a wolf in sheep’s clothing, damnably quick.
This Porsche 944 Turbo was first registered on 23 November 1989 and began its life somewhere winding roads are hardly in short supply: the tiny Principality of Andorra. From the Pyrenees, it later made its way via Italy to Germany. A thoroughly European life story, then.
Its more recent history is well documented by numerous service and repair invoices dating from 2022 onwards. That same year, the Porsche was also treated to a new turbocharger. Larger brakes and coilover suspension give the 944 a sportier setup today and leave little doubt that it was never intended merely to sit around looking pretty.
In 2026, it eventually found its way to Porsche Zentrum München Süd, where the Turbo underwent a Porsche Classic Check. Together with the accompanying invoices, this provides a reassuringly coherent record of its recent history.
Today, this 944 Turbo presents as a Porsche that has clearly benefited from documented investment in its mechanical condition and maintenance, with a history spanning several European countries. Andorra, Italy, Germany – its life so far has certainly not been dull. And as a 250 hp 944 Turbo, there is little danger of it becoming so now.
