Clubsport : the magic word that meant, for the 928, being 100 to 120kg lighter than the S4 due to the generous use of aluminium, the elimination of superfluous comfort features, a smaller compressor for the air conditioning unit, a lighter exhaust, no rear wiper, a simplified wiring loom, no PVC undercoating and lighter, thinner magnesium wheels. In addition, the car had a final drive ratio modified to 2.72 :1 for stronger acceleration, a shorter, competition gear shift, limited-slip diff, a ZF gearbox without vibration damper, sports seats, a 1.5 cm wider track and a ride height lowered by 20 mm that radicalised the car's personality.
Of the 27 examples of the 928 Clubsport produced, 4 were prototypes used for development, 4 others, painted Grand Prix White, were offered to Porsche 962 Le Mans drivers as PR and test vehicles, while four others were kept for internal use by the marque. The 15 remaining cars were made available for sale and the example on offer was the only one to be presented in " forest green metallic " bodywork with " cashmere beige " interior. It was acquired new as a company car by Bernd Kahnau, the Porsche engineer who joined the company in 1979 and contributed to the development of the 924 GTS, the production of the 928 and the 911 Speedster, and remained project manager until the 991. In addition to its specific Clubsport features, his 928 was fitted with an " SP " engine with special cams.
Kahnau, as attached to his " CS " as Derek Bell was to his, (which he kept for 18 years), told us how much he enjoyed driving it. The car subsequently sold in Switzerland, and it was from a professional who had bought the car second-hand that it was acquired by the current owner, cognisant of how special it was.
With just over 120 000 km from new, in a rare, preserved condition, this car comes with its Porsche certificate validating all the series numbers and the configuration of colours ; it also has all its original manuals. Impossible to find in this conserved condition, with such transparent history and in this spec, this Porsche 928 deserves its place in the most highly selective international collection.

Interview with Bernd Kahnau, December 2022

Which aspects of the development of the Porsche 928 did you work on?

At Porsche, I was responsible for the 911 icon, above all the 911 Speedster, and the models 993 to 991. Long before I entered the workforce in 1979, I found out about the 928 thanks to my father, who was the director of production at Zuffenhausen. After my engineering studies, I became a production planner, specifically for the 928. When I moved into development, the 928 accompanied us constantly during the testing phase. And that is how I came to drive it in Algeria, the United States and Canada, contributing to the different stages of development by giving my opinion.

What memories do you have of driving the Porsche 928 Clubsport that we are presenting for sale ?

At Porsche, I had the idea for Clubsport, in other words, a lightweight version of the production car. And that's how a 928CS came to be, as well as my 911 CS. I had already taken to the 928 as a family car : the rear seats were recognised legally as child's seats and, unlike the 911, it had a boot. The 928 SC therefore arrived at the right time and I ordered it as a company car. The sound was truly exceptional ! It was pure driving pleasure. As for the colour, I've always liked British racing Green. And so that's what it had, with a beige interior. Classic and elegant, matching the shutters of our English country house - which is how I was able to convince my wife !

Did this car influence your subsequent work and to what extent ?

Yes, it influenced my work a great deal ! At the time, we were building the 911 for gentlemen drivers. There were therefore few concessions to comfort. Porsche's renaissance was largely due, during the replacement of the 928, to the necessary gentrification of the new 911. This is how the 928 indirectly contributed to the success of the 911. And few people know this…
