Could this be the finest example of its type? A UK supplied right hand drive 2.4S coupe, numbers matching and entirely faithful to its original specification that has covered only 72,000 miles with a full and comprehensively detailed history from new. Indeed, it presents as new throughout following a painstaking and sympathetic restoration that spanned eight years and cost £190,000 – culminating in a ‘Best of Show’ Award at the 2018 Salon Prive Concours event.

The Certificate of Authenticity on file confirms that the car completed production on the 18th January 1972. Finished in Light Yellow with Black Leatherette and Corduroy optional Recaro sports seats it featured a number of options including rear wiper, electric sunroof and windows, tinted windows and Koni dampers. The original invoice, also on file, details that Porsche Cars Great Britain supplied the new 2.4S to Ian Anthony Sales Ltd, the Porsche dealer based in Bury, Lancashire on the 7th of February 1972 at a price of £4,794.21, this including their 17.5% dealer discount.

A number of enthusiastic owners subsequently enjoyed the Porsche and most importantly they cherished it and maintained it diligently, as indicated in the regular service stamps in the original service passport, (a rare item indeed) and further detailed in the many service invoices and correspondence on file. Indeed, this must be the best documented 911 of this period that I have ever come across with three large files of history that includes all ownership detail and most MOT certificates and even tax discs.

In 2007 the 911 was fully inspected by the well-respected Porsche guru Peter Morgan. The careful stewardship of each owner was confirmed in his report which remains on file. He confirmed the good original condition in all aspects and great driving characteristics. Later, in 2009, the S was offered for sale by Porsche specialists Autofarm who had been maintaining the car for some years. A Classic Car Magazine ‘Ads on Test’ review confirmed the mileage at this time at 69,987 miles. They described the car in glowing terms. “…we can’t imagine you’ll find a better maintained and more original 2.4S for sale”.

The last owner, a regular Hairpin customer, purchased the S from Autofarm in 2009 having read the Classic Car Magazine article. He enjoyed the car for a year or two with regular return trips to Autofarm for maintenance as documented. However, as we have learned from other projects, his quest for motoring perfection knows no bounds. To this end Autofarm were commissioned to restore the car without regard to cost but very much with regard to maintaining originality and the authentic feel that this example had in spades. As one might expect the work completed and the painstaking detail is fully recorded in numerous invoices, letters, emails and photographs on file. No compromise was acceptable, everything had to be 1972 accurate – hence the car features original parts rarely seen now, for example the original headlamp tyre with clear bezel and red horn type. The car was stripped to a bare metal body shell and every item was rebuilt, refurbished or in the case of a very few items replaced by original old stock parts, not from a donor vehicle. All finishes are period-correct from the original underbody wax and front compartment paint to the interior which is completely original, save for carpets and door bins. I could go on but hopefully you have the picture by now…

Following completion in 2018, the 911 was invited to attend the 2018 Salon Prive Concours Event which celebrated 70 years of Porsche since 1948. Needless to say, there were a number of great examples of the marque on display but it was this car that was singled out as the winner, the large cup, rosette and certificate accompany the car – a fitting tribute to the work completed.

Since then the 911 has been gently run in over about 1,000 miles and any restoration snagging issues attended to along with regular servicing as detailed in further invoicing.
