"The most historically significant of all Porsche models, so far, has been the 911, which was introduced in 1964 and, in much the same form, was to be the mainstay of Porsche production for more than 30 years, albeit constantly modified and uprated. With broadly similar layout to the 356, the 911 had a steel platform chassis with springing by torsion bars, Macpherson front struts and rear trailing arms, and flat-six air-cooled engine and five-speed transmission first seen on the 904. More than 40 years later, early 911s continue to be competitive on circuit or special stage. 
Chassis number 304708 is stamped in the correct place and indicates that this short-wheelbase 911 was manufactured in Stuttgart in 1967, with the car being registered in January of 1968. The two-door Coupé, presented in black with black leatherette interior and has the correct early type 901 aluminium crank case as well as the very desirable aluminium gearbox casing. The car also sports the 1968 upgraded torque tube and suspension bushes as well as adjustable front turrets, 911 S brake calipers, vented discs all round, rare Webasto heater, basket weave S dash and later ‘orange’ dials as well as being fitted with a set of the very desirable and rare ‘Deep Six’ Fuchs alloy wheels. Whilst the car has a few ‘S’ parts on it, such as the 7,200rpm red line tachometer, it didn’t originally leave the factory as an ‘S’.
Recently imported from South Africa, having been bought as one of two Porsche’s from a deceased estate sale, this car offers the buyer the perfect opportunity to either restore the car to its factory specification, or to build it into a 2.0 litre cup FIA race car. The hugely popular race series started by Lee Paxted-Page and James Turner sees the SWB cars duelling it out in epic clashes such as the highlight of last year’s Goodwood Revival Fordwater Trophy race where the likes of Formula One stars Jenson Button and Mark Webber battled it out on track. The shell appears to be remarkably structurally sound with bulkhead, floor, body panels all benefitting from living in the dry South African climate. The vehicle has benefitted from a light mechanical attention since it’s arrival in the UK and does run, however, a full recommissioning would be highly recommended before hitting the roads.
