Description

"Introduced at the 1963 Frankfurt Motor Show as the 901 following Peugeot's complaints about the use of '0' model numbers. The early cars featured a short wheelbase chassis, a smooth 'flat six Boxer' engine and two-litre capacity that gave the car excellent performance. The preceding Type 356's rear-engined layout was retained but the 911 switched to unitary construction for the bodyshell and dropped the 356's VW-based suspension in favour of a more modern McPherson strut and trailing arm arrangement. The 911 model quickly found success with its great looks and outstanding performance with the capability to be a grand tourer or circuit race car. The 911 first appeared in the 1965 Monte Carlo Rally with victories coming in the 1966 and 1967 European Rally Championship. In 1968, the 911 emphatically established its credentials as a frontline rally car, works-entered 911s winning eight of the 15 European Championship rounds, firmly placing the 911 as a mainstay in historic rallying.
Manufactured in June 1966, this 1st Series Porsche 911 ’wood-dash’ was delivered new to Teaneck, New Jersey, USA. Recently the 911 has been extensively restored including a full engine and gearbox rebuild, a respray in the original Polo-Red livery, re-chroming of the brightwork, a new black leatherette interior and a renovation of all the instruments. The body and paintwork were carried out by 'Vehicle Experts Ltd.’, Europe, while the original matching numbers engine and gearbox were rebuilt by marque specialists in the UK. Completed to a very high standard, the vendor reports circa £70,000 has been spent on the restoration which was undertaken with the closest attention to detail. Baring the original specifications from new including the wood dash and steering wheel, this rare example is presented in very good order throughout and would be a great addition to any serious collection. This Porsche is offered with a copy of the old US Title and EU Customs duties paid documentation."
