Description

Following its utter domination of the Can-Am racing series, Porsche used its experience with turbocharging technology gained in motor sports for serial sports car production. Launched at the 1975 Frankfurt Motor Show, the Type 930 – also known as simply “Turbo” – was distinguished from the regular 911 by a turbocharged flat-six engine, flared wheel arches to accommodate wider wheels, and a prominent “whale tail” rear spoiler. An instant hit, the planned production run of 500 cars for homologation purposes was doubled to 1,000 almost immediately.

While the earliest 930 models were fitted with a 3.0-liter turbocharged flat-six, significant updates arrived for the 1978 model year in the form of an enlarged 3.3-liter engine with an air-to-air intercooler that used the ambient air flowing through its core to lower engine temperature and help increase power. Other improvements included a re-profiled rear spoiler and 917-derived brakes, while the suspension system received stiffer anti-roll bars, firmer shock absorbers, and larger-diameter rear torsion bars. Due to more restrictive US emissions laws, US-specification cars were slightly down on power compared to European-delivered examples.

One of only 677 ROW (Rest of World) market coupes built for the penultimate 1988 model year, this Porsche 930 is finished in paint-to-sample, two-stage black over a distinctive black leather interior with pinstripe velour seat inserts. As Porsche’s flagship model during the period, 930 models were very well equipped with a plethora of standard amenities including electric seats, electric windows, air-conditioning, and an eight-speaker stereo system, while a number of other optional personal customizations were made available. This example, however, was specially – and evidently very specifically – ordered by its long-term first owner Manfred Fischer of Eislingen, Germany, with a stronger battery as its sole factory option. A dual-port four-pipe exhaust system from the even higher performing 930 S and three-spoke steering wheel were provided by the Porsche Exclusive Department, per this 930’s Porsche Certificate of Authenticity on file.

Showing 11,221 km on its odometer at the time of cataloguing – or just less than 7,000 miles – this 930 presents in extremely original and unmodified condition throughout. A true time capsule, according to the consignor, it also retains its factory-applied finishes throughout. Owned and maintained by Mr. Fischer until its sale to the current owner, this 930 benefits from a recent servicing and meticulous concours-level detailing.

Accompanied by its manuals, warranty book, tool roll, jack, spare, tire inflator, and first aid kit, this 930 must be one of the finest, best-preserved examples extant. Never before shown or offered to the public, the sale of this spectacular, uniquely optioned, paint-to-sample Turbo is an occasion not to be missed.
