"Much of the Porsche 911's development had resulted from the factory's racing program and it was the period Group 4 homologation rules, which required 400 road cars to be built, that spurred the development of 'Project 930' - the legendary 911 Turbo. In production from April 1975, the Turbo married a KKK turbocharger to the 3.0 litre Carrera RSR engine, in road trim a combination that delivered 260bhp for a top speed of 155mph. In 1978, the Turbo's engine was enlarged to 3.3 litres, gaining an intercooler in the process; power increased to 300bhp and the top speed, of what was the fastest accelerating road car of its day, went up to 160mph. But the Turbo wasn't just about top speed, it was also the best equipped 911 and amazingly flexible, hence only four speeds in the gearbox, being capable of racing from a standstill to 100mph in 14 seconds! The Turbo's characteristic flared wheel arches and 'tea tray' rear spoiler had already been seen on the Carrera model while the interior was the most luxurious yet seen in a 911, featuring leather upholstery, air conditioning and electric windows. More refined than hitherto, yet retaining its high performance edge, the Porsche 911 Turbo sold in the thousands, becoming the definitive sports car of its age.
The story begins in 2013 when Porsche GB set a challenge; they asked the UK main dealer network to go out and source a restoration project and spend a year (eight months in reality) restoring it, this resulted in the Porsche Classic Competition which culminated in an awards ceremony at Brands Hatch. It saw 12 cars restored, by Porsche centres across the UK, all being returned to a likely better than new standard. This example, restored by Porsche Leeds, was restored to such an exacting and spectacular condition that they won the award for Mechanical Restoration and Porsche Cars GB Employee's Choice against fierce completion. The car was then later presented at the Classic Car Show at the NEC, Birmingham in 2014.
Supplied new to JCT600 in 1981, this now stunning example of the iconic 930 Turbo is offered in the very best colour combination of Guards Red with black leather trim. It had been left to determinate in a garage since 1999 when, spurred on by the Porsche competition, Porsche Leeds liberated the car and chose it to be their competition entrant... well if you're going to restore a Porsche why not pick one of the most iconic cars the German marque has ever produced, of course! Documented by a photographic build, the car was completely stripped and rebuilt by Porsche technicians, the body was taken back to bare metal and using only official Porsche panels restored by JCT600 body clinic as a nod to the original supplying dealer. The mechanical restoration was more challenging as the team wanted to retain, where possible, any original parts, therefore as many parts as possible were reconditioned and, where not practical or possible, replaced with all new Porsche parts. The same philosophy was adhered to with the remainder of the car, not wishing to lose all originality, where possible parts were reconditioned or restored but where this was not possible they were replaced with official Porsche parts. The car today is stunning and like new, as you would expect, but now carries the significant provenance of perhaps the best restoration you could covet by the manufacturer themselves. Although displaying the original mileage of 104,223, the truth to the mileage is nearer 1,000 miles since it was fully restored. The history file accompanying the car is comprehensive and almost as impressive as the restoration, there are no less than three magazine mentions of the successful 930 at the Porsche competition, a full seven page feature in Classic Cars magazine, this is coupled to the original stamped service booklet and book pack. Within the leather bound ring binder is the Heritage Certificate, the original marketing programme for the Porsche Classic Competition, countless invoices showing the parts supplied by Porsche which total some £30,000, and invoices for any services that they had to outsource. The car has recently had a full body detail and passed its most recent MoT test certificate with no advisories, which is not surprising. While a restoration by Aston Martin or Jaguar on their models is staggeringly expensive, this is the opportunity to purchase a piece of Porsche history. In fabulous condition and a multiple award winning car, estimated at what we believe is the market value for a 'run of the mill' restored 930 Turbo, this is an opportunity not to be missed.
